    Default Prado Advice

    Dear 4x4 / Prado experts

I m planning to buy Prado TZ 96-00 (5 Door) , which i think i could fetch at less than 2M. I m buying this vehicle for off road mountain adventures. Pl guide me is this 12-15 years old vehicle still reliable, comfortable and tough to take for adventurous trips. What is the major prob in the car and which things should i check before buying one. Also tell me, is this 3000 cc desiel engine 6 cylinder or 4.
Thanks in advance for ur advice.
    Regards
    Asad

A vehicle that old could be troublesome specially if you're traveling with family. While inspecting a vehicle, do a double check on its Diesel/Fuel pump, as they're quite vulnerable to the diesel quality we have here and tends to wear out by 100k to 150k kms, and a new pump is really costly.

Thanks for ur advice, I know that old car would have these issues and its wise to change all filters, oils and belts when u buy a used car, as far as fuel pump is concerned, I m very concious about it as I had 2004 mercedes last year and I broke out one day due to failure of fuel pump, driven 100k +, though it was petrol car but merc requires premium quality fuel, new costed 25k, so I must check and replace it, thanks again for such advice

    the differences are
TX = No sunroof / No wodeen Panels / Interior fabric is less quality / no Dual AC (only real disadvantage only when you nedd to haul all seven passengers , otherwise front ac is enough or 5 passengers. And who needs to operate sunroof. i have never used it in my TZ)

TX limited = sunroof/ good quality fabric (lik tz) / wood panels (like tz) / no Dual Ac

TZ = All of above things included , ncluding Dual AC (really helpfull in cross country travelling)

TZ G grade = all of above + power seats + leather interior

As for fuel consumtion all 1kz engines hve 6~7 in city and 9~10 on highway (tested many times when travelling from karachi to northern areas.

They are reliable provided you take care of them. Timely lubricant changes, and keeping the engine cool and they should last you a long time. They are also reasonably comfortable on long journeys. Fuel economy depends on how you drive them. Keep them under 120kmph and your range will be almost double. Low end torque is great for cross country travelling.

Try to get the 1kz with the intercooler if you plan to do long trips over inclines and general travelling in the summers.
