Default The Phantom Of City Sadar Road

When I first started this thread, I had just taken delivery of a stock, recently-auctioned 1984 TLC FJ40.

Gaari to khareed lee, lekin I had little/no idea of what I was going to end up doing to the vehicle. For a very long time, I planned to give it a "decent" sort of makeover: something involving some nice tyres, a respectable paint-job, comfortable seats, a roll cage, and that's about it. At that time, little did I know what was in store for me...

Somewhere along the line, this project developed a life of its own. Baaton baaton mein, it metamorphosed from being a quick, run-of-the-mill restoration into something quite ambitious and challenging. Something that was in-your-face, and in-your-guts. Something, the likes of which we had seen chronicled in the pages of Off Roader magazines...but something which we'd never really attempted back home.

This rebuild is STILL ongoing. It's far from over, just yet. But along the way, it's indeed become something which seems to have a life of its own. Ironically, this as-yet-unfinished vehicle has developed a...character.

While it may not be the most ego-stroking fact...a lot of people know "The Phantom...jiss ka maalik woh Fouad Hafeez hai"...rather than knowing "Fouad Hafeez...jiss ke paas woh Phantom hai"

Also, along the way, this vehicle has been instrumental in my making a huge number of friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers alike. Without a doubt, all of these people are gentlemen; sporting enthusiasts, and engine afficianados, and automotive hobbyists...with whom, a common love for the sport, has brought us to common ground. Their support, good wishes, advice, expert opinions, constructive criticism, and attention to detail, has made this hunk of steel slowly emerge into its current shape. I have no doubt that the end product will be a fusion of the ideas and aspirations of all of these friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers. To all of you; my deepest gratitude. It has been (and will be) one helluva ride, so far!

For now, though, this thread (having picked up over 700 replies) is going to undergo some TLC of its own. A chronicle (in pictures) of all the water that's flown under the bridge, thus far, as we progress towards the desired end state (shown in the last picture of this post). Let the photos begin!

And...I think it's about time for some of the photos to change here, too.

    Quick Long Distance Update

After exactly three months, the Phantom's rolling chassis is leaving Jamil Ustaad's shop, and is headed to Nikku Ustaad's place, instead...where the engine and transmission await it. In the next couple of days, both of these will be mounted to the frame, the shafts will be emplaced, shocks will be affixed...and basically, the vehicle will be readied for the 1st engine start...

    Exciting times!

SuhaibKiani has a terribly exciting thread titled "The 2LT Diesel Dyno Punga", on here. This post of mine is copied and pasted from THAT thread, to THIS one...for input / advice from knowledgeable readers, please.

I've been studying this thread with keen interest. Especially the bottom lines, with regards to engine output and performance.

Being a complete and utter layman, with little/no knowledge of the technical terms and jargon being used...I have this overpowering urge to turbocharge and intercool the 1HZ engine that's in the process of being bolted onto the Phantom. A few questions, if I may...

    1. Could anyone quote ballpark figures for the increase in performance (hp and torque) that such a modification would entail?

    2. What sort of decrease in fuel consumption averages (in general terms of percentage) is likely to come about?

    3. What would be the ballpark figure for a turbocharger installation, and what additional equipment (gauges, sensors, switches) if any, would it entail?

    4. What would be the ballpark figure for an intercooler installation, and what additional equipment (gauges, sensors, switches) if any, would it entail?

    5. Most importantly (and perhaps this should be the FIRST query, rather than the last)...the FJ I'm rebuilding doesn't really need acceleration, or huge amounts of take-off speed, to my mind. With the 1HZ producing a respectable 129 bhp, and the (next benchmark) 1HD-T and 1HD-FTE producing +160 bhp...is it REALLY a practicable idea...or am I just playing around with figures that will ultimately just add to "bragging rights" on power/torque?

Inquisitive minds would like to know...
Any advice would be thoroughly appreciated!

Now that we're nearing the end of the line, and things are coming together, these are perhaps the last few days that any departures from the original plan of action can be contemplated and implemented. Sooo...another query for the knowledgeable out there...

Despite my best efforts, there is no locally available option which allows for the 7:37 guchha to be used in diff-lock axles. Any other thoughts on how to make this a differential lock vehicle (for at LEAST the rear wheels), whilst keeping the 7:37 differential setup?

@ Fouad, An ARB air locker setup can make both front n rear diffs fully locked. Its somewhat costly though, you can check it up on the ARB website. Someone in Lahore imports ARB stuff, might be cheaper if you can get it directly from Australia yourself. Good Luck!

Regarding the engine querry above, you already have good idea about my inclination. Regarding forced induction of 1HZ, you are unlikely to achieved figures close to 1HD-FTE reliably.

Thanks, Doc. As always, your advice is timely, prompt, succinct and thought-provoking. I've done some research on the ARB air lockers, before as well. And they DO seem to be a very good option, indeed. Where I've managed to come up at a dead end every time, is whether or not it's suitable for the 7:37 guchha being used in the Phantom. Any advice on this aspect? I mean...it'd be a shame to get the air lockers, and then find that they can't fit properly. And do you have any idea on how I might contact the stockist in Lahore you were telling me about?

Regarding the engine querry above, you already have good idea about my inclination. Regarding forced induction of 1HZ, you are unlikely to achieved figures close to 1HD-FTE reliably.
yeah yeah...MORE powarrrr! As an exercise, though, I still think I'm going to give the turbo-charging/inter-cooling a shot, at some point in time. I know...it may appear obstinate on my part...but I'll still pass on the fuel injected turbo-diesel 1HD-FTE. Besides...abhi tau engine khareed kar liya hai. Issey bhi tau istemaal karna hai, na.

Had the opportunity of speaking to another thorough gentleman, and sporting enthusiast; Talat Bhai from Karachi, with reference to the shocks and steering stabilizers for the Phantom.

Having spoken at length to Talat saab with the reference of Guru Ji Aamir Malik, I'm thoroughly satisfied, that the issue of the Phantom's shocks and stabilizers will be adequately addressed...with some exciting, out-of-the-box solution to cater for the special needs of this strangely unique beast being born!
