Question 1996 toyota surf: a good buy?

Hey guys, my family needs a car that is fitting for us this is what we need in that car.

    1. it needs to fit at least 8 people.

    2. it must have good diesel/petrol or cng average.

    3. reconditioned over 2005.

    4. must have good resale value, something that sells when i want to upgrade.

    5. and most important of all it has to under 15 lakhs.

Now i have come up with a couple of options, a 1996 land cruiser ( with a 4.2L diesel engine which gulps diesel =P) or a 1996 surf (3.0L diesel which I heard is a bit more economical). Now what I wanna know is which car is a better buy?

Please tell me the diesel/petrol/cng average these cars get and which is a better buy ECONOMICALLY. I've been eye-balling this surf for some time and thought to ask the p.w. community before sending in an offer: https://www.pakwheels.com/used-cars/...karachi-318855

    Hey

    1. The surf will barely fit 8 people, and they definitely won't be comfortable stuffed in like that.

    2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Surf you're referring to comes with the 1KZ, diesel power plant -- which isn't exactly known for its fuel economy.

    3. Surfs will probably hold their value better than most other SUV's -- Pakistani's are a Toyota buying nation and these cars hold their value exceptionally well -- a Surf shouldn't be much different (relatively speaking).

    4. You could probably locate one in the 15 lakh range; would need to do some snooping around though.

If I was you, I'd probably bite the bullet and get a 92-93 Land Cruiser. Higher maintenance costs, but a whole lotta car for the money.

    @lakersfan

Thanks alot for your reply man. So is there much of a difference in the mpg of these two monsters? wand landcruiser is a toyota, so does it have resale? What average do they give? and if i install cng will they be a bit more economical? waiting for ur reply.

i'm convinced we should buy the lc80, but my mother says it's shape looks a bit old, are there any after market lights to make it look newer, or at least cooler?

A much better choice...the LC80 is a rock-solid truck...looks good too, but I guess that's subjective. It came with the 1HD diesel power plant I think -- a great, torquey engine, but yeah, fuel consumption would be an issue. Personally, the difference in fuel consumption between the 1HD and the 1KZ is justified by the added performance.

As far as the visual "freshening up" is concerned, I'm sure you could fit aftermarket lights, bumpers, hoods, rims, tires to great effect...if you're into that sorta stuff, that is. In fact, there was thread on Pakwheels a little while back on someone "upgrading" an older model Landie...you could perhaps use that as a starting point.

if you are looking for economy, then surf and land cruiser are irrelevant in this sense, my land cruiser gives 10km on long and 7,8 km in city(with or without ac dosent affects the average too much as it is 4.2), surf might give u 12km or max 13km but with the price of diesel over RS.100/L still no economy. i have no experience of pajero so cant say anything about its average, but u can easily find good pajero in ur budget 96-98 model

but if you are not going to use your suv as a daily runner then go for the big elephant like i did, i bought land cruiser vx instead of prado ( i only use it once or twice a week), enjoy amazing torgue of 1hd-t.And just as a caution, for oil change it takes nearly 10 litre of engine oil.

    Default Buy an Intercooler PAJERO

1- Spacious for Family of 8.
    2- Comfortable than Suf/Cruiser.
3- Way more fuel efficient than any of the above.
    4- Reasonable resale
5- Good value for the money you spend.

Thanks alot for your replies guys, I already have an 01' mini pajero so i have had a very good experience with Mitsubishi, but my family says it's not good looking and I should go for a toyota, if it gives at least 10kms per litre without a/c then i guess it's ok. Because i will only use it for family outings or shaadis, which only happens about 2 times a week =P I can use my mini pajero which gives VERY VERy good CNG average with a/c for everyday use.

    Try getting a face-lift '97 or a '98 Surf SSR-X or SSR-G you'll have to increase your budget a bit. Or you can try getting a really clean '96/'97 5-door Pajero 2.8L.
