    Proper as in


    1. New headgaskets

    2. New bearing shells

    3. New studs and bolts

    4. New pistons

    5. All new gaskets

    6. New oil pump

    7. New valves, guides, seats, springs and retainers


    ^^^ and that's just the parts.


    To your second point, be my guest, if you can find one. You know better than anyone that early UZs are getting rarer than hen's teeth. Of course a fresh junkyard UZ will cost less than a rebuild.

    Parts alone will cost an arm and a leg, and then some. Why just stick to early 1UZ though? The thinner rods in the late model motors are not an issue unless you go FI. In fact, the VVTi motors are 300 HP as opposed to 250 HP for the first year of production.
