Default 99 Surf Transmission Behaviour - help needed from Surf owners

    Hi All,

I have a KZN185 99 Surf with 1KZ-TE, and I have an issue in the tranmission behaviour, I don't get any engine braking in L and 2 mode, plus at any speed in D, when i lift my foot off the accelerator, the rpm drops to idle around 800. In D as well, at a 100kmph, the rpm drop to 800 when i lift off,

There is another detail to it, When driving in L it immediately upshifts to second gear as i reach a little speed, but does not upshifts any further,, if i take it above 47 and then lift off my foot, rpm drop to idle and it keeps on rolling,, when the speed is dropped to 47 again,, it tried to downshift in to 1st gear,, rpm raises and gives engine braking for 2 seconds.. and then again upshifts and drops rpm back to idle..

47 is mentioned as the minimum speed required for the vehicle to shift down in to 1st gear when L is selected. if you shift to L above 47 it will wait till the speed is reduced.

Any one having a similar surf can they please share the correct behavior of the transmission in L and 2 mode, in 2H mode.

I have ECT , which works fine I guess, prevents the vehicle from shifting in to top gear at 85, and shifts at a 100 kmph. I have not noticed it too much for lower gears.

over drive is also working fine. downshifts and upshifts seem to be perfect in D.

Any help & recommendations would be appreciated.
Do the environment a favour, Use less airconditioning .. and please walk to the shop to get a pack of cigarretes..its only a 3 min walk..

    Hi All,

ok, so the problem is solved. The solution may not apply to all similar vehicles but this is the first thing which you should check.

In my case the issue was that at the ECU connectors, 2 wires were somehow previously interchanged, which were not giving the right signal to the ecu of which gear is selected from the Selector lever. The vehicle detects L, 2, N and P. Every thing worked fine, the selector showed the correct gear on the speedometer, and there was no check engine light. It took some fine diagnostic of electrician which had vast experience of these cars, and their hand written ecu pinouts tables, which they refer to as diagrams.

So if there is no apparent mechanical issue, please get your electrical's checked by a qualified or experienced technicians who has the correct data for your ECU .

The ECU is located behind the glove box at the upper portion.
