    Ferrari
deny January date for '07 car debut

A spokesman has denied reports that Ferrari will give its unnamed 2007 single seater a track debut on 16 January - the same day as the new Renault's maiden test.

"No, it's not true," Ferrari's head of the motorsport press office, Luca Colajanni, said from his office in Maranello.

The famous Italian squad's veteran test driver Luca Badoer, meanwhile, said at Jerez on Thursday that retired seven time world champion Michael Schumacher is keeping up to date with Ferrari's pre-season progress.

"He receives in real time on his computer the information that we gather, and he can see at any moment the data from the telemetry," the Italian told the sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I keep talking to him regularly, and because I know him well I am not at all surprised that he keeps on being interested in things."

Badoer, however, insisted that it is 'too soon' to expect Schumacher to test a red car in the near future.

A lot of action at Jerez

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in the last day of testing this week at Jerez. The McLaren driver finished ahead of the two Renault drivers, Heikki Kovalainen (second) and Giancarlo Fisichella (third).

Today’s main event was Fernando Alonso’s first laps at McLaren Mercedes. The Spaniard completed a total of 90 laps to familiarise himself with the MP4-21.

"I'm pleased that I was able to drive the McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 car earlier than expected and would like to thank Renault and Flavio Briatore for agreeing to this,” said Alonso. “I'm really excited about the future and would like to wish everybody a merry Christmas and a happy new year."

Also of interest was Marco Andretti’s first experience at the wheel of a Formula One Car. The American IRL driver drove Honda’s RA106 and set a best time of 1.21.888.

Sebastien Bourdais completed his three-day test at Toro Rosso, the Frenchman gradually improving his pace to set a competitive fastest lap of 1.21.277.

Lauda unsure about flawed top three

It is unclear which of F1's top three teams will emerge with the 2007 world championship, three time winner Niki Lauda says.

Renault, McLaren and Ferrari all have the potential to be strong next year, the Austrian legend admitted, but all also appear to feature fundamental flaws, the champion of 1975, 1977 and 1984 told Austrian broadcaster ORF.

"Renault won the last two championships," 57-year-old Lauda said, "but (Heikki) Kovalainen has never even started a Grand Prix."

He added: "Strong car, but the driver question still needs to be clarified."

He said the opposite situation exists at McLaren, because it boasts the back to back drivers' champion Fernando Alonso but a questionable package.

"It is well known that the McLaren was not the best car this year," Lauda said.

Lauda also drove for Ferrari in his 172-race career, but he thinks Kimi Raikkonen might have trouble filling the boots of the Maranello based team's departing top driver, Michael Schumacher.

"It will be a difficult task for him, because (Schumacher's) German precision helped Ferrari to triumph for many years.

"Kimi is going to have to work very hard, which is something that he doesn't always like to do."

    Ferrari conclude 2006 testing programme

Final day of testing this year for Ferrari, which brought its season to a close at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit, in southern Spain.

Indeed, it fell to a Spaniard, Marc Gene, to be the final Ferrari man to drive on a race track this year. The Scuderia’s official test driver brought the planned programme to a close, which included development of new components, adaptation of the car to the new tyres and overall reliability: 99 the number of laps completed, the quickest in a time of 1.21.012.

Unfortunately, Luca Badoer’s day, which should have featured a similar programme to his colleague’s, came to a premature end because of an engine problem: 39 laps for the Italian driver, the quickest in 1.19.894.

Clay Regazzoni killed in road crash

    15 December 2006
    - FORMULA 1 Season 2007 - RAIKONNEN WINS -686947

Former Grand Prix driver Clay Regazzoni has died in a road accident near Parma, Italy. Mr Regazzoni was 67.

Regazzoni made his Formula One debut for Ferrari, driving alongside Jacky Ickx in the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix. Finishing fourth in that first appearance, the Swiss driver went on to win his maiden victory just four races later at Monza.

He won a further four Grands Prix during an 11-year Formula One career, which ended in 1980 when he crashed his Ensign car heavily at Long Beach, sustaining severe spinal injuries.

A positive end to 2006 testing

McLaren has made a few headlines in December, but the final day of testing for 2006 saw the team complete perhaps its most important test so far of the off-season as Fernando Alonso joined the squad with the blessing of Renault for a quick run in the Bridgestone-shod MP4-21.

Alonso, running minus any sponsorship, set the fifth fastest time of the day while his rookie team-mate led the way as testing came to an end ahead of the Christmas break.

"Today has seen the completion of the 2006 test programme with an encouraging session in Jerez this week,” stated McLaren Mercedes CEO Martin Whitmarsh. “The primary focus of the three pre-Christmas tests has been the learning process between ourselves and Bridgestone.
    Cliquez ici...
We have been able to gather valuable data on how to get the best out of the Bridgestone Potenzas and we are currently feeding this back into the MP4-22 programme.”

“The drivers have also been working through various development programmes for the MP4-22, such as suspension, aero and set-up work. With Lewis we have also spent time on activities such as putting him out in traffic so that he builds experience of running with other cars.”

Fernando Alonso got behind the wheel of a McLaren for the first time during testing in Jerez on Friday. Although Alonso’s contract with Renault is only due to expire on December 31, the French squad decided to allow the world champion an early taste of his new team.
“Fernando asked me to test one day with his new team to acclimatize himself to the car,” revealed Renault team principal Flavio Briatore. “We enjoy a very good relationship and considering his work and his fabulous achievements these past two years with the double world titles in 2005 and 2006, we decided to give him this opportunity.”

Due to sponsorship constraints, Alonso drove an unbranded MP4-21 at the Spanish circuit and sported a plain white helmet and overalls. After replacing McLaren tester Pedro de la Rosa in the second car, Alonso took to the track alongside Lewis Hamilton, his team mate at the Woking-based squad for 2007.

    Montezemolo pays tribute to Regazzoni

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo honoured Clay Regazzoni - Ferrari driver for six years from 1970 to 1972 and from 1974 to 1976, who was killed on Friday in a car crash - with the following words:

"The death of Clay Regazzoni has robbed us of a man of courage and generosity who lived his life demonstrating those values," said di Montezemolo.

"I remember him not only as one of my drivers during unforgettable times, but also as a true supporter of Ferrari. For him, races had to be tackled with boldness and on the limit, from the first to the final lap.

"I celebrated a first World Championship win with him and Niki in 1975, and I will never forget his great victories at the wheel of our cars, both in Formula 1 and sports cars.

"This is a very sad moment for me, especially as his "Swiss-Neapolitan" character meant he was also a unique person away from the race tracks and so many memories of him now come to mind."

    Regazzoni was 67.

    Another award for
    Schumacher

The flood of awards and tributes to F1's retiring seven time World Champion continued this week, after Michael Schumacher travelled to Maranello to receive his biggest trophy of all.

Standing at 1.6 metres and weighing no less than 200 kilograms, the massive glass trophy bore the names of all seventy two Grand Prix the German won for Ferrari, according to the Spanish sports newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.

    McLaren put brakes on
    Kimi's
    early test

Ron Dennis pushed for Fernando Alonso's early test debut but did not allow Kimi Raikkonen to similarly drive before Christmas, according to a report in the Spanish press.

The newspaper El Mundo Deportivo claims that while Raikkonen seemed unbothered about whether or not he would win an early release from his McLaren contract, Ferrari chiefs actually did ask their McLaren counterparts for clearance for a 2006 test.

"Ron Dennis did not give his approval," the Spanish nationwide daily sports newspaper read.

El Mundo Deportivo quoted Dennis, Woking based McLaren's chairman, as recently saying that negotiations for Alonso's release from his Renault contract would likely differ from the talks with Ferrari.

The Briton reportedly said: "(That is) because the relationship between McLaren-Mercedes and Renault is very different to the relationship between McLaren and Ferrari."

    Barcelona to modify F1 layout

One of the fastest corners at Spanish grand prix venue Circuit de Catalunya is to be changed in the name of safety, a spokesman for the Barcelona venue confirmed on Monday.

The second to last corner, the fast right hand sweeper called 'Europcar', has been tightened, he said. Additionally, instead of leading into the similarly sweeping final bend, the corner now leads into a new ninety-degree left corner before connecting to the existing 'New Holland' curve.

Another safety improvement is the asphalting and enlargement of some run-off areas, while the spokesman also revealed that the F1 paddock would be made bigger ahead of the race in May of next year.

Work on the third significant modification at Circuit de Catalunya, which opened in 1991, is to begin in January.

Title in 2007 to be 'difficult' - Renault

Renault's F1 President Alain Dassas has admitted that winning a third successive world championship in 2007 is going to be "difficult".

The Frenchman, however, told Spanish newspaper Marca that the goal for next year is to keep winning, despite the fact that double World Champion Fernando Alonso has switched to McLaren.

Dassas said: "It is a fact that we are going to miss Fernando because he contributed a lot to help Renault to win these two titles (in 2005 and 2006)."

He described the 25-year-old Spaniard as an 'incredible driver', but did not have the same superlatives for Renault's 2007 driver line-up comprising Giancarlo Fisichella and rookie Heikki Kovalainen.

"We will have to see how the championship develops," Dassas continued. "Both drivers are very good - they are not Alonso, but they are great drivers.

"The biggest uncertainty is Kovalainen," he said, referring to the Finn who - like Alonso - is 25.

He said of Kovalainen, Renault's test driver in 2006: "He knows what it feels like to win but he is still very young.
    "

Alain Dassas concludes that Ferrari is therefore the favourite to win its first titles for two seasons in 2007.

Agreeing with the interviewer, Dassas answered: "Yes, without a doubt Ferrari start off as the favourite for next year. They have worked with Bridgestone for years, they know their working processes and that is an obvious advantage for them."

The Diario As, meanwhile, asked Renault Team Principal Flavio Briatore which challenge he saw as most difficult - succeeding in politics, or winning the 2007 title with Giancarlo Fisichella.

"I am not involved in politics," he answered, "but I do believe it will be difficult to win the title with Giancarlo."

Mosley repeats threat to strip F1 licences

Max Mosley has repeated his threat to strip F1 drivers of their Super Licences over an argument about safety.

Angered about the Grand Prix Drivers' Association's complaints concerning the Monza circuit earlier this year, the FIA President wrote the GPDA a letter warning its Directors to leave the issue of safety to experts.

"We will always listen to drivers, but the decisions must be ours," Mosley wrote in his latest column for the British magazine F1 Racing, amid drivers' new threats to boycott tests because of lagging safety.

"And if we have to lose a race or two or a few licences to make a point, we will. It will be better for the sport in the long run.
    Cliquez ici...
    "

66-year-old Mosley hit out at some drivers' response to his initial warning about interfering, presumably including David Coulthard's insistence that the GPDA would not be 'intimidated' by the FIA.

Mosley wrote: "Not the most intelligent of responses, you may think, to a gentle warning.

"We obviously cannot have two bodies telling circuits what is required."

Raikkonen to make Ferrari debut in late January

Kimi Raikkonen will make his test debut at the end of January, it has been revealed at a traditional Ferrari media event.

On the website of Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, it is explained that the Maranello based team's new red racer is to debut at Fiorano between 15-20 January, before it heads to Ferrari's other private test circuit, Mugello.

Raikkonen will then drive the car for the first time between 21-23 January.

"Kimi must understand that this is his moment to win the world title," Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo told reporters.

"Then Jean Todt can calmly retire, and I can withdraw to (the Italian island) Anacapri!

"Just as (Michael) Schumacher did, Raikkonen arrives at Ferrari in the right moment. We are a team that has lost Schumi, Brawn and Martinelli, but we still have veterans like Costa, Simon, Baldisserri, Battistini.

"We have Michael in his new role, and also Domenicali, Almondo ...

Montezemolo, 59, also played down suggestions that Raikkonen's affection for heavy drinking could prevent him from ever achieving Schumacher-style success.

"(Eddie) Irvine was a bit like that, and even a boy from Kerpen liked to have a drink, even if it is hard to believe.

"We are not worried about Kimi - he is motivated and has just the right approach for Ferrari.

"It must be said that in 2005 Raikkonen would have been champion with a more reliable car. He broke down five times while he was leading.

"Massa is also strong and perhaps he will even be regularly faster."

    Renault wanted Raikkonen says Kovalainen

Heikki Kovalainen says Renault wanted a different Finn in his seat for the 2007 season.

The 25-year-old rookie, who is replacing back to back world champion Fernando Alonso, admitted that signing him to be a racer is a 'risk' for the French squad.

"I knew Renault wanted a big name and if they had been able to get Kimi Raikkonen, I'm sure they would have taken him instead of me," Kovalainen said in a column for the BBC.

"I understand that totally. It's less of a risk for a big team if they have a driver who is a proven winner."

Still, the former GP2 racer and Renault test driver insists that he is not dreading the pressure of filling Alonso's 15-GP winning boots.

"There will be a lot of pressure," Heikki confessed, "but mainly because I want the results, not because I am filling someone else's shoes."

Kovalainen said the ultimate goal is to repeat Alonso's success, but a more realistic goal for the first race in Melbourne is 'to score points'.

In an separate interview provided by Renault's press office, he said: "Maybe there will be some bad races, but I will focus on things one step at a time."

Fisichella admits pressure on for 2007

Giancarlo Fisichella has refused to shy away from reports that 2007 is probably his last chance to shine in a front running F1 racer.

The Roman scored two wins compared to former Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso's fourteen in the past two seasons, and it is suggested that Flavio Briatore only extended Fisichella's contract for 2007 to ensure continuity as rookie Heikki Kovalainen joins the team.

"I am under pressure," Fisichella, who turns 34 later this month, admitted to F1's official website, "because I have to lead the team."

"I am comfortable with pressure and I have lived with it all my life so for me it is just another challenge, that's all.

    "

Fisichella thinks he can push for the 2007 championship, even though in the pre-Christmas tests so far, young Finn Kovalainen generally set the pace for Renault.

But the Italian rhetorically quipped: "Badoer was (also) quicker than Massa at Ferrari (but) do you think that Luca is going to replace Felipe just because he was quicker at the test?"

HONDA TO REVEAL the RA107 soon
As revealed to Formula1.com by team CEO Nick Fry last month, Honda are taking a two-pronged approach to the launch of their 2007 car. The RA107 will be presented to the media on January 25 in testing colours, with a special livery launch to take place at a later date in February.

The January 25 event, designed to give the press a technical insight into the Japanese team’s new machine, will be staged at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya where the car will make its official test debut a day earlier. In attendance will be senior management, along with the full Honda driver line-up of Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello, Christian Klien and James Rossiter.

Details of the livery launch have yet to be confirmed. Following the departure of previous title sponsors British American Tobacco, Honda’s winter testing to date has been conducted using an all-black colour scheme. However, Fry has already hinted at a rather different look for the team’s cars in 2007.

“We have a marketing plan which will surprise a lot of people and get them interested by our approach,” he told Formula1.com.”You will not see a car covered in Honda logos - it will be something very different.”

    Good timing from Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher picked the 'perfect moment' to hang up his Formula One helmet.

That is the belief of Jean Alesi, who drove for Ferrari between 1991 and 1995, winning once.

The 42-year-old Frenchman told the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport: "I know that many people say that Michael could have gone on for ever, but there are also more and more people who believe he is getting too old.

"Me? I think he chose the perfect moment.
