Shanghai Auto Show 2011

The stage is set for the 14th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, scheduled to open its doors on April 21st. Auto Shanghai 2011, as its called, will be attracting manufacturers and attendees from all around the world, with no less than 75 new vehicles to be shown.

This year's exhibition will be set up at the biennial Shanghai New International Expo Center, with 230,000 square meters set up for the exhibition hall (a 35 percent increase from 2009's show). This year will see over 2,000 different companies from 20 countries attending, setting a new record for Auto Shanghai.

The domestic big six of FAW, SAIC, Dongfeng, Changan, GAC and BAIC will be joined by independent own brands such as BYD, Brilliance, JAC, Haima, Soueast, Lifan, Hafei, Zotye, Dongfeng Liuzhou and King Long. They will be bringing there all as stiff competition will be coming from Germany's luxury brands, including VW, BMW and Daimler, top Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan, and Detroit's Big Three.

Small Chinese automaker Zotye is famous for recycling old Fiats and Daihatsu’s. Mind; Zotye doesn’t steal, Zotye actually pays for the right to copy, something rare thing in China indeed. But this new mini car really looks like something of their own. It’ll be at the Shanghai Auto Show as a concept and no matter how ready it seems, with Zotye it can still take years before it hits the market.

When it arrives it will compete in a already very crowded segment with offerings from all Chinese automakers. Price will start around 60.000 yuan. Engines will be small, 1.0 and 1.3.

Chinese automaker Haima will bring a new concept suv to the Shanghai Auto Show. Is has all the crazy thingies of a concept but size wise it looks bigger than the Haima 7 SUV that was listed in July last year. The concept might be the first sign of a second SUV in Haima’s line up.

You know, several years ago I thought the age of crazy Chinese concepts cars was practically over, but Geely has to come back to prove us all wrong. Behold: the Moka!

The Moka is Geely’s attempt at showing what we might be driving in the future, a modular hybrid car that allows motorists to connect together to jointly use their combined power for happy motoring.

Power will be derived from a traditional gasoline engine and two sets of batteries to give a hybrid power train and on demand all wheel drive. When the cars are separated and in motorbike mode they will be under electric power, but when they are joined together they will use gasoline power. Geely says that the batteries can be juiced up to 80% full in just 15 minutes and should be able to go for 650kph on full tanks of juice and gas.
Perhaps Geely would have been better off showing this on the first of this month.

BYD is no longer alone copying old Lexus’ SUV’s. Here is another one, the Landscape V3 from small automaker Huanghai, translated as ‘Yellow Sea’. The Landscape V3 debuted at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show but was never listed. Now it is finally ready…

Size: 4620x1860x1830, wheelbase is 2730 and weight 1360. It’s 4×2 or 4×4. Engines a 2.0, 2.4 and 2.5 diesel, the patrol engines are from Mitsubishi. The 2.4 has 105kw and 200nm, top speed is 160km/h. Price will start around 130.000 yuan.

It is a preview of Chang’an’s new line up that has to compete with the biggest and best in autoland, such as Benz, Audi and BMW. Well, don’t we love this sort of ambitious plans? Chang’an has joint ventures with Ford, Suzuki, Volvo, Mazda and PSA and makes a small number of rather boring mini and compact cars under its own name. No more boring tomorrow…

Brilliance will bring loads of news to Shanghai Auto Show, the new X3 SUV, the new X4 sedan and a face lifted FSV. But there is yet more in the shape of the yet nameless concept sedan on pic. This very good looking machine is likely to turn into the successor of the old and tired B6.

Peugeot will bring a Crossover Concept to the Shanghai Auto Show. The crossover is designed by PSA’s new R&D center in China by Chinese designers. Peugeot does not yet offer a SUV in China which is a big miss since SUV’s are still very popular in the Middle Kingdom. Peugeot sells an SUV in Europe, the not too pretty 4007 based on the Mitsubishi Outlander.

MG will bring a MG5 concept to the Shanghai Auto Show. Codename is AP12, it is a hatchback for the compact car segment and is based on the Roewe 350 platform. The concept is similar in style with the MG Zero concept that debuted at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show and turned into the MG3.

The renderings show a very sporty car, in line with MG’s heritage and the also-sporty MG3.

The Greatwall C70 debuted as a concept at the 2010 Beijing auto Show and seems by now almost ready for the market, the C70 is expected in March 2012. Greatwall uses the Tengyi-name for sedans in China, in English they will use the sexy sounding name Voleex.

Size: 4945×1865×1480, wheelbase is 2800 and weight 1580kg. Engine is a 2.0 Turbo with 150kw mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed tiptonic. Price will start from around 150.000 rmb.

The standard Haima Freema MPV is a rather boring looking vehicle about which not many, even in China, have ever heard about. Haima so wants to spice it up a bit with this Freema C-Sport which will debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. The C-Sport got some extra plastic here and there but sadly no more power.

Not a bad looking machine though, note roof-rails and spoiler above rear window. Sporty indeed.

Ital Design sold the same drawings FAW as well as to Dongfeng Auto for their S30 models. So what’s a car company to do? Well if you have Mazda as your partner the most obvious solution would be to borrow some of their styling, thus the B90 concept was born, a mixture of Mazda and Besturn.

The very first live shots of the Peugeot SXC Concept for the Shanghai Auto Show. The SCX is designed in China by Chinese designers. It is, along with the times, a hybrid. Engines: 1.6 patrol with 218hp and 280nm, plus two electric engines with together another 95hp. Yes!, we believe ll that for sure. Petrol engine drives the front wheels, electric engines the rear wheels, Peugeot calls this system HYbrid4. Size: 4870x2035x1610. Nice looking machine it is, at least from the front, the back ain’t so good…

There are cars with too many lines and there are cars with not enough lines. The SXC concept’s back is just plain boring, like the designers pen ran out of ink.
