Yes...I love my cars too...but sorry to digress on the subject but i gotta make a point here...hope it doesn't bore you guys too much!
Free import of automobiles is absolutely essential (if initially with SOME duties, perhaps with a ceiling of 50%), including USED automobiles, to enable COMPETITION and to discourage the UNFAIR and ANTICOMPETITIVE pracitices of local manufacturers, which include, undue pressure in gov't lobbying, price fixing, interlocutory licensing agreements on parts and other practices which are of immense detriment to the consumer, and constitute blantant abuses of the free-market system we have in Pakistan (supposedly).
One of the first things I intend to upon returning to Pakistan and practising as a lawyer is to bring antitrust and unfair competition lawsuits against all the local manufacturers and seek both compensation for consumers, punishment for the manufacturers and lobby for new laws regulating the market in general.
This should not, in any way, affect local people employed in the auto industry, but, on the contrary, be on benefit to them by creating better conditions of work and hopefully better pay.
