New UK system for immigration
LONDON: The government unveiled details on Tuesday of a points system designed to select foreign workers according to their skills and crack down on illegal immigration.
Would-be immigrants from outside the European Union will have to apply for the right to work in Britain through embassies and consulates abroad, where their skills will be tested. They will be given points based on their qualifications, work experience, language ability and age. “I think this system will make a big difference,” said Prime Minister Tony Blair. “We are a country that sees a tremendous net positive having people come to our country and contributing to it,” he added. “At the same time, we have to protect ourselves against abuses.” The government said potential immigrants would be divided into five categories under the scheme:
1) Highly skilled workers like doctors and financial experts who will be able to come to Britain even if they do not have a job offer.
2) Skilled workers with the equivalent of A-levels who may be able to come if they have a job offer.
3) Low-skilled workers who will be allowed to fill specific job vacancies for fixed periods on the understanding they will leave at the end of their stay.
4) Students.
5) Temporary workers staying in the country for only a short time.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke said the new system would allow Britain to control immigration more effectively and crack down on illegal immigration.
“Today’s announcement sets out the government’s policy to deliver a firm but fair, simpler, more transparent and more rigorous system which will benefit our economy and protect our borders,” Clarke said. reuters
