These Village improvised machines are called Petter rehras, Maruta, Gharruka, Jugarroo and with so many names her in Rural India.
A Simple Jeep chassis or a locally girdar based chassis is taken with a stock jeep ( 3+1 of CJ3B ) gear is retained. The engine is not mated directly to the gear instead it is kept well above the chassis and a belt driven pulley arrangment is there to transfer the power oa petter engine to the gear box. Accelerator cables are attached to the plungger pump of the engine while the clutch and brake arrangement of the jeep is carried forward as it was.
A newly buit jugarroo could be yours for as low as 22000 Rupees and there is big industry in Sunam, Sangrur in Punjab and Meerut & Shamli in Western U.P.
Believe it or not, it could ferry 1500 bricks, or 40 quintals of sugarcane with virtual ease ( indeed leaving a cloud of black smoke behind so that everybody comes to know that a jugaroo was here).
But surely it is doing the job quite well viewing the rural requirements; easy to repair, low cost, high fuel efficency and above all no need to get it registered or pay taxes.
Well these machines are finally getting impounded by the traffic police nowadays ( atleast in Punjab )
