Williams star Mark Webber believes the male monopoly on Formula 1 drives is secure for the foreseeable future.
The Australian believes women are unlikely to break the
stranglehold because they tend to be more risk-averse than their male counterparts and have too much common sense.
Asked whether he expects to see women competing in grands prix, Webber told the Guardian newspaper: “No. I see no reason why this situation would change.
“I think it’s a question of the risk-taking side – if you see people driving like maniacs on the road they’re almost always men.
“In a sense women are too logical for this business.”
The last female driver to make it all the way to F1 was Giovanna Amati, who unsuccessfully attempted to qualify a Brabham in the early races of 1992.
But the prospect of a bona fide female star has been much talked about over the last year due to the success and celebrity of Danica Patrick in America’s IRL IndyCar Series.
The Danica phenomenon has sparked interest in the F1 paddock, although the 24-year-old has said that a move to Europe is not on her agenda in the near future.
