Govt approves sale of blended fuel
ISLAMABAD: The government approved a project on Thursday for the sale of blended fuel in the country from August.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
The prime minister said after the meeting that the introduction of blended fuel would help the government meet the country’s energy requirements. The blended fuel will consist of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline. This is the first time that fuel in the form of ethanol blended with motor gasoline will be sold in Pakistan.
The fuel will initially be sold under a pilot project through Pakistan State Oil (PSO) petrol pumps in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. An official statement said that the pilot project would be launched next month. Blended fuel would subsequently be made available throughout the country based on the result of the pilot project, the release quoted the prime minister as saying. Aziz said that blended fuel is environment-friendly and cheaper, as it contains a higher percentage of octane. He said that several countries including Brazil and India were already using it.
The prime minister said that the provinces would be directed to amend the rules to allow the sale of blended fuel. Aziz praised PSO and the Hydrocarbon Institute of Pakistan for proposing the project, saying that it would have a positive and lasting impact on the government’s plans to overcome the energy shortage in the country. In the meeting, the prime minister also ordered steps for better traffic management and road infrastructure improvement, as traffic jams resulted in the waste of fuel and loss of foreign exchange. The government was working for the improvement of public transport so that the people would have alternative means to commute, he said. staff report
