If you want to avoid trips to the workshop, here are a few guide lines:
__avoid JDM's like the plague
__avoid "bumper to bumper jenynan, total original, no touchups, no work required" cars
__avoid "alhamdullilah kabhi maintenance ki zaroorat naheen parhi. Bas oil aur filter change karta hoon" cars
__avoid cars that are "banker driven", lady doctor driven"," army officer driven" etc
__avoid cars that have been diesel sprayed; their underbody will be rotten and oily. They will usually creak if raised on a jackstand
Prioritize cars that have been maintained regularly with service receipts available, either from a 3s or from a reliable shop. If a service history is not available (very likely), be prepared to get some preventive maintenance work done; half an hour on the forums will give you plenty of information about preventive maintenance. This will reduce your number of trips to the workshop, saving you time and money in the long run.
2012 model Cuore, Alto, and Cultus are easily within reach; if you are lucky, you can even get an early model Swift in a decent condition. An almost new FAW XP-V is also an option.
