Real time Traffic management "Google Maps"

Every metropolitan city of the world has one major common problem "THE TRAFFIC". Proper sophisticated traffic monitoring can overcome a little bit the bottle necks but again with millions of cars on the road.. one incident can do a ripple effect and the music is heard on the far end due to one incident. I thought explain a little bit of the traffic monitoring system which is not only helping the traffic controlling authorities but as well as the commuters. The New York city with a population with legal residents is somewhere 9 million. The population density is around 28000/ square mile. Lot of cars and lot of intersections and resulting a lot of traffic congestion. Average congestion cost per person in US is around $430. Annual congestion delay per person is also on average about 40 hours per year.

Anyways. In NYC the Dept. of transportation in joint venture with few firms have installed numerous cameras ( see here NYCDOT - Real Time Traffic Cameras ) on the roads and mostly on the major arteries and intersections. The feed is sent to the head quarter which that way in real time change the timings of the signals as well as help reroute the traffic. It also help rescue departments to reach in case an accident on any major area causing delays. Although the rescue 911 is very quick anyway. The feed is also available to public and they can monitor the roadway which their travel along the route. The data also goes to major GPS firms which then reroute their equipped GPS in car with real time traffic. The data goes to the mapping services like Google maps / Bing or whatever. The feed is also shared with few dedicated traffic updates radios like am 1640 here or every news channel update it while looking at these camera feeds. An Individual can look up in his/her cell phone with real time traffic update 24/7. I have recorded a small video. And will share some of cameras links as well.

and people in Washington lose 67 hours per year in traffic conjunction, we lose that much in about 2-3 months

Sir area is 303 square miles for 5 boro ( queens,Brooklyn,manhattan, statin island,bronx) population as per record is 8.4 million.. I have recheck and confirm. I read it somewhere in an article. I hope I am not wrong. But will correct it.. For sure

Sir area is 303 square miles for 5 boro ( queens,Brooklyn,manhattan, statin island,bronx) population as per record is 8.4 million.. I have recheck and confirm. I read it somewhere in an article. I hope I am not wrong. But will correct it.. For sure

You are correct about population density as it is in sq. miles. We usually study sq. km here that's why I thought it's too high. According to wikipedia New York population density is 27,550/sq mi (10,640/sq km)

Brother, its an excellent project as I suggested earlier. The project has been put on hold till elections as after elections week we will be distributing projects to students. I have already discussed this project with students and are researching about it. I will post the updates about how project goes. I have contacted some funding agencies (ICT-R&D and Pakistan Science Foundation) to help us with the equipment required. I am awaiting the response from them, hopefully soon we will initiate the procedure. I have asked my students to visit this thread again and again to see latest ideas shared.

And the latest about traffic updates, yes thats in our list as well but at a later stage if you are asking that.

In US they have different infrastructure for monitoring and ALPR. but in Pakistan mau be same infra struture is used to do both the things.

67 hours per year in Washington? that becomes a delay of like 12 minutes a day. and you call it worst? in Pakistan i think i daily waste 20 minutes daily in congestion on jail road.
