KARACHI: The German carmakers, Porsche, in line with their plans to expand their operations in the country, unveiled five of their latest models on Sunday at the DHA Golf Club.
Among the models on display were the two-seater sports car, the Boxster carrying a price tag of Rs5.9million, the four-seater Carrera 911 and the Sports Utility vehicle (SUV) Cayenne, worth Rs6.8 million. Besides, a Porsche Cayman S was also unveiled.
Talking to The News, Abu Zar Bukhari, Chairman, Auto-Technic (Pakistan), the agents for the carmaker in Pakistan, said, "The young people somehow seem to harbour the idea that they have to go overseas to bring their dreams of luxury to fruition.
We want to dispel that notion and are trying to bring that luxury to them right at their doorstep, in their own country." Bukhari further said that these were not luxury models but were performance brands.
He emphasised the simplicity of technology and design, existing side by side with the latest in innovation. He made it very clear Porsche had no plans to begin assembly or manufacture in Pakistan due to Porsche’s corporate policy that the cars would not be assembled or manufactured outside Germany.
When it was pointed out to that sales in Karachi could be impeded on account of the very anarchic law and order situation, he said, "Robbers don’t understand Porsche. They will rather go for locally reputed models." He acknowledged that it was easier to sell Porsche in the upcountry market.
