Default Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T and then to GA15DE!

Hello everyone. Hope you are all doing well.

I have a Nissan Sunny B13 in white and for the last 21 years that I had it, It had the CD17 engine. The engine had been through 3 overhauls and the generator was failing constantly now. So rather than going for a 4th overhaul, I decided to change the engine.

I went to Ahaata Mithu Khan in Saddar Rawalpindi as I saw on this forum and other mechanics in Islamabad and Rawalpindi had told me that they could help. Fair enough, I found alot of Nissan CD engines, but the one that caught my eye was a CD20T (2.0d Turbo). I knew the cd17 engine produced 54bhp and 104Nm at 2800rpm, but the CD20T produced near 90bhp and 174Nm at 2400rpm ! And since the price for the CD20 and CD20T were the same, you know which one I'd choose. :p

But there was a little catch. Mr Ashgar Khan said that he won't sell it with the electronic injection pump that it came with, because to whomever he sold the CD20 with that injection pump, the customer came back to him with alot of complains that it's won't start, accelerate etc etc. Bascially he said he doesn't know how to wire the ECU.

So I agreed to fit the mechanical injection pump in my cd17 to the CD20T (yes, they are compatible). So all was done. Engine+transmission was changed and money exchanged hands (50K for those of you who were wondering).

The car is now joy to ride! Lots of low-end-torque! Put it in 4th gear while coasting in 45km/h and put your foot down. It pulls hard once the turbo kicks in.

But there were several issues (at the start):
    1. You can?t plant your foot down for too long. Otherwise the engine overheats.
    2. Secondly, The economy is 12.7Km/l (max). I have searched the net and asked other cd20 owners. They get a good 15km/l and 16.5 on the highway. I suspect that?s the result of fitting the mechanical pump.
    3. On the highway, the engine WILL overheat if driven continuously at 125km/h.
    4. Lastly, The gear ratios seem wrong. The forum member "Spectra" with his thread

    https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/eng...ssan-sunny-b13

    Says the following:
    1st gear change at 45
    2nd at 90
    3rd at 120
    4th at 155
and so on and so forth

My car is screaming at 90km/h in 3rd gear! I'm sure it's operating near red-line. And, on the highway, it maxed out at 160km/h.

Over time, I have learned what and how the various things work in the engine. For example, I saw that many of the wiring/plugs were left unattended. One water inlet was not attached and the EGR valve was not functioning. Also some air inlet/outlet pipes were also not connected. Spot the difference in the pictures.

Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1511919Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1511916

I suspect that the wirings/plug were for the electronic injection pump and unless I don't have any expert on wiring ECUs, it's a dead end for me. Maybe the plug and the cut wires in the mechanical pump are connected?

Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1512650Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1512654

The water inlet, on the other hand turned out to be the water inlet for the turbo! I used my engineering skills to craft out a T junction in the top radiator pipe and fitted the extra end to that inlet. Thank God the engine runs cooler now even under hard acceleration and continued use. Haven't tested it on motorway though. It did slightly overheat once or twice during peak summers, but I got that frontier sorted.

Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1512651

Looking at some other CD20T engine pictures I figured out that the unattended air inlet/outlet at the top of the engine head (the air-oil separator), goes to the turbo inlet pipe. When I did connect a pipe (from some other car) on to the radiator pipe, the engine ran smoother! And also, when I revved the engine, the temperature gauge would plummet. So that's good I think.

Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1511919

Next was the EGR value. I learned about their working and their advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I think the disadvantages far out-weigh the advantages. I don't want carbon to accumulate in the injectors and intake manifold. The EGR value should only open when the engine is cruising under light/medium load (to lower combustion chamber temperatures and prevent engine over-heating). And since the EGR value was operated by the electronic pump, I figured I should have a manual switch so that I can have the control in my hand. I fitted switches with LEDs in the cabin to turn on the EGR using a vacuum solenoid. In city, the valve is off and when I coast at say 100 or 125 on the highway, then I turn it on. (Haven't gone on highway after this modification though). We'll see what happens.

Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1512652Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1512653

My immediate future plan is fit an intercooler to the engine. With an intercooler, The intake air temperature will be lower and hence the engine will run even cooler. Also, since the air is cooler, it will be more dense and hence I'll get more power out of the engine. But it?s torque I am looking for. The CD20Ti (Turbo and intercooler) has more than 200Nm of torque. It will be even more fun then!

So, that's all I have done uptill now. If someone can help me out to make the performance and mileage better, I will be very grateful.

Aoa Everyone, I guess no one seemed interested in a Nissan Sunny with a 2000cc Turbo Diesel Engine judging by how many replies I got (which were none). :p But that's okay, I tried everything to sort the heating issue of my engine. Thermostat value, head gasket and radiator. Nothing worked.

Things got worse when I shifted to Khewra, ICI Pakistan (got my first job there). The temperatures there sore easily to 48 degrees! I couldn't go home to Islamabad over the weekend without a major overheating problem occurring (I WASN"T EVEN USING THE AC!).

So I decided to get the engine changed again. This time I did my research and I also decided not to get any engine from Ashgar in Pindi (Mitu Khan). Just No. Really bad experience.

So I went on a day trip to Peshawar to see what was in the market. That place is paradise compared to Pindi! Nissan Twincams engines by the bulk! There were alot of options. GA13, GA14, GA15DS, GA15DE and one GA16 Carb engines!

I sorted through many engines and found one in particular GA15DE with a 5 speed M/T that looked very clean from the inside (I had a friend's mechanic with me to properly guide me). Best of all, it had uncut wiring with it's original ECU attached. See pictures.

Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1585182Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1585183Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1585184

The engine and transmission costed me 55k! Compare that with the ones in Pindi! I was able to sell my diesel engine for 22K to someone else in the market and only paid 44K for the total swap. The people there are true experts! They had all the wiring sorted and the engine started in the first self! See some swap pics.

Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1585185Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1585186

Car runs like a charm and ALOT quiter with extremely few vibrations! Oh, and the performance is amazing. It lacks the torque I used to get from the diesel from standstill, but at high rpms, the engine sings. I can hit 130Km/h in 3rd gear (I donot have an RPM meter to tell if I had actually maxed it). I am very happy with this swap.

There is just one issue. Fuel Gauge. Since, i was fitting an EFI engine, a pump had to be installed in the now-petrol tank. The pump got fitted, but I think they messed up the guage. Will have to investigate that.

Will upload more pics and I need to change the instrument cluster with one that has a tachometer.

I would really appreciate it if someone could send me the service and wiring manual for Nissan Sunny B13 model and also the GA15DE ECU wiring diagram.

    Hey thanks!

There is another issue that I discovered. Was hoping you could help me out. Whenever I turn ON the AC, the engine stalls. I understand that the engine rpm is raised slightly when the AC is turned ON. This was achieved using a vacuum solenoid that pulled a plunger in the diesel engine. See picture.

I know that now the signal has to go the ECU and then it will control IACV. But which wire/pin is it? and what type of signal is it?

And what should I do about the fuel gauge?

to me personally diesels are so much better to drive in the city due to low end torque.

    nice swap. enjoy the ride.

Thanks! I prefer diesels too. I loved the turbo 2000cc i had in it. There was soo much pulling power even when the car was fully loaded up. And it also gave me 16.7km/l. If only the over-heating problem could be resolved, I wouldn't have swapped in for a petrol.

Finding a diesel one in perfect condition is hard, and I guess you got an engine which was already end of life.

I inquired from the guy I had got my QG15DE engine about diesel engine price, and he had quoted 90K -100K in Rawalpindi. Said imported diesels are damn expensive these days...

Yeah, I agree! They are very expensive. I do miss the low-end torque alot.

Bad luck i say. CD20T in good nick is an amazing engine to have. The one you got was probably not set up properly. Turbo cooling or oiling issues maybe. If you can visit pindi we have a nissan specialist in suktan ka khoo who can sort out the AC idle up or other electrical issues. Message me if interested.

Bro, major mistake first of all, you got the setup too much expensive
2ndly how are you compensating the boost with diesel pump???
Did you bleed coolant of the radiator?

But sorry to hear i just saw your thread now you are replacing the engine

No doubt it's a great engine. But even 1.5 twin cam will smoke your ride and 1.8 dohc nissan QG18de will be hell quick for this diesel monster.

Have done some modifications on my Nissan Ga15DE. They are:

    1. K&N Apollo Cold Air Intake Installed
    2. 2" Exhaust Down-piping
    3. Local Cheap Sports Muffler
    4. Catalytic Converter Removed
    5. Engine Tuned to Advance Timing (12 BTDC)

Well i think am late now, but i would be happy to help, as i am using CD20T for 3 Good years, never gave me any problem, it gives me avg of 14-15KM/LTr in local

now let me tell you why your cd20t was overheating.

First off all whoever told you the CD17 pump is compatible with CD20T engine was rong & dumbass mech. CD17 pump cant be compatible with CD20T coz there is difference of nozzles. CD17 uses Nozzle part # 193 & CD20T uses nozzle part # 221.
So thats the major issue of overheating the timing & pressure of pump is not matched with your engine.

Also too much lag in your current setup too.... Not much responsive as it should be.

Get these things checke by proper mech

    Fuel Pump
    Fuel filter
    Injectors
    Tappets

Also use good engine oil please.. Not some zic or caltex or 20w50 etc

The setup you've installed is not that much responsive.

    Custom headers
    Bigger tb

Install these two mods aswell and go for tapet checkup too.

    I've QG18de in my b11
And it's way too fast than your GA15.

It has 2.5 downpipe with hks original 2.5-3 inch exhaust.

    One reasonator in middle.
And k'n air intake, with 46mm throttle body.

My pressure on each cylinder is 195psi and 3-4 difference on 2-4 cylinder.
My next mod is custom made inlet and headers.

Plus I've a stage 3 clutch masters clutch pressure installed with nissan QG18de genuine gear with large ratios.

    Unhappy

    Aoa Dani_kk,

I will add custom headers. Throttle might be difficult for me. How have you changed the throttle body? Pictures please?

Ever since I swapped the engine, I have not had any tappet adjustment done on this engine. Some mechanics tell me no need tappet adjustment with this engine! :O

I went through the Nissan Pulsar N15 FSM and I found the valve clearance section. I used to have a baleno in which you adjusted the nut on the rocker arms to adjust the clearances. GA15 doesn't have these rocker arms. You adjust clearance by placing shims between the valve lifter and camshaft. Engine change of Nissan Sunny B13 from CD17 to CD20T Good decision? -1689801

Are there any good mechanics in Islamabad who can do this tappet adjustment? I'll do a compression test too then.
