@EXPERTS - Does engine oil have an expiry?

Hi Guys,

i was just wondering.

if you do not use a certain amount of oil from a full pack. Matlub 4liter kai dabbay main sai 3liter use hoa.

does it still maintain its properties or does it have an expiry?

I think it will stay good until 6 months or so for an opened pack.
Sealed- 1 year. Better to use it earlier though:P

If the oil bottle is well sealed pack, then it doesn't have any expiry date frankly unless the bottle is stored in extreme or abnormal conditions.
Company only print manufacturing date on it and don't mention the expiry. You can read the bottles.

As per OP, if 1L is kept well sealed (Tightly closed and un-contaminated) and stored in proper room temperature then 6 months is enough time to consume it IMO.

Under optimal conditions, the product is stable for an extended period of time and can be used as long as the American Petroleum Institute (API) rating on the label continues to meet or exceed the requirements listed in your owner's manual. If the rating is still current, shake the container before use to blend any additives that may have settled.

I would guess that applies to other oil mfg's as well.

In pure form this stuff has sat in the ground for millions of years so 2 years on the shelf is not even an blink of an eye to this stuff.

If it makes you happy - I have ran my diesel mercedes on 80 year old heating oil (diesel fuel) with no problems at all.

It was filled in a heating tank in a basement of a building.

An open container is subject to the moisture ingress and water contents to be checked. Other indication is haziness of the oil due to water contents. The oil should not be used, if appearance is hazy instead of clear & bright.
