It is restricted officially, but then not so forcefully as such. we had no problems with that in our trip and there were all sort of DSLRs! The key is to keep it a bit low profile, especially while crossing the Nagarparkar entrance check-post.

Border can be visited in nangarparkar..at entry post rangers asked about cameras but not strictly enforce the same..i wish thre will be some rain otherwise

I suggest to use own cars if number of participants is 10 or <10..this will save travel cost, i'll try to arrange accomodation in nangarparkar..

I guess number of members will touch the figure of 15 in a day or two hopefully as some members who confirmed but not yet deposit their share due to shortage of time in this case Hiace is the best option.
All in one transport will make more convenient and secure and also fun for everyone for all the way and hiace also feasible in desert track Cost will increase but not much and we will do camping there why you arranging accommodation there ?
