It actually depends upon how rapid acceleration driver want... And should be as per gear ratio of gear box.
Increasing RPM upto redline in Tachometer (Normally nominal revs/min to gain max hp of specific engine) does not harm engine but abnormal engaging/disengaging clutch and pressure plate might worn them earlier than normal.
Hydromatic transmissions takes into account, engine rpm, car speed and accelerator position to shift gear properly. This is the reason automatic transmission has more tool life as compared to same standard manufacturer manual transmission.
