Forget about reversing safely if you are the kind of guy who turns his head like in the exorcist movie while reversing. You won't see a thing in the rear due to visibility from inside and ride height. All around visibility from rest of windows is okay. If you are driving in an unfamiliar area, chances are that you may not be able to keep clearance from sides due to visibility. This may not apply to guys who are 5'9' and above. My experience is based on my height 5'7'.

Only side mirrors with motorized moves save you lil, else its a Lambo interior for looking back. :rolleyes:

PERFORMANCE AND DRIVE

Performance and Drive Quality
While these two aspects of a car are crucial in making a purchase, little do we understand that these are subjective as well and may not necessarily be tangible. It's just like buying a top of the line Apple's MacBook Pro with Retina Display to check emails or alternately buying a Core Duo based computer to run latest generation of AutoCAD. This leads us to unending debates and arguments without ever reaching the shore.

Let's be very honest to each other: More engine power does not always mean an overall better drive quality and experience, else manufacturers would be shoving in 4.7L Windsor HiPo V8 pushing out 271 bhp at 6000 RPM and 312 lb/ft of torque at 3400 RPM. Similarly a small engine may not give you the thrill you desire. It's all about personal preferences since no one has a gun at your head to opt for XLi or for that matter a Grande, 1.6 Altis and what not.

The trend in regular C-Segment sedans is advancing towards fuel economy, quieter cabins and comfort being careful so that different model line ups do not entirely overlap in features or do not cross into each other's territories. I mean Toyota wouldn't want Corolla to overtake Camry and similarly they wouldn't want to bring down the Camry to a Corolla's level while keeping focus on the different target markets. Things have to move forward in their own respective lanes at a pace that is sustainable from business standpoint.

Having said that, 1.3L Corolla GLi (Auto) cannot and should not be compared to even 1.8L donkey cart. They are two different categories. In the preceding paragraphs, where possible, I'll try to compare Hornet with 8[SUP]th[/SUP] and 9[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civics for in case someone is still in a fix in deciding where to head.

Thrust/Power to Weight Ratio
Hornet is powered by Toyota's 2NZ-FE engine. It is a 1.3 L (1298 cc) engine originally designed in 1999. Bore/Stroke is 75mm / stroke is 73.5mm (Honda City is 73mm x 80mm), with an Output of 63 kW (84 hp) at 6000 rpm and 121 Nm (89 lb/ft) of torque at 4400 rpm (Honda City is 128 (13.1)/4,300) and 73 (100)/6,000 RPM. Later VVT-i system was incorporated to improve fuel efficiency, emissions standards and overall performance. Comparatively it's an old time-tested engine but one of Toyota's most successful ones basing upon its robustness and reliability. But I know it sucks big time after paying with your hard earned money to get an old technology engine. Great things happen to small engines in Pakistan only.

While the above paragraph may lay you guys off, but don't give up yet. In real life, the Hornet does not lag, suffer from fatigue when loaded up. It can't have that "vroom" effect because the car has been aimed for families or individuals looking for a compact sedan that gets the job done in style and comfort while being fuel efficient, user friendly and maintenance free. Indeed the chassis is bigger and may be heavier, but somehow this trustworthy engine continues to pull up well. Proprietary tweaking by Toyota in the ECU / SFI perhaps? Nevertheless I'm planning to go to Pir Sohawa on this weekend with my family with two-three large bags (typical family use) inshallah.

Handling/Manoeuvrability
Cornering If you expect sportier or aggressive cornering, not even a bone-stock Grande is going to help you. With this wheel package comprising of 15"x6 alloy wheels and B Grade Eurostars in 195/65-R15 profile, high Centre of Gravity (COG) and large gaps between the wheels and wheel arches, you need to slow down a bit. Not that it is not achievable but you should not compare it to an 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic or even a 9[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic. Just be happy with and thankful to the 5.4 Meters turning radius else if you have a thing for extremely small turning radiuses, go buy a Vitz.

Acceleration
It's appropriately powered (I didn't say adequately powered). Reasonably snappy but has it's limitations. If that be the consideration, just skip ahead to 1.8L (any trim). No, no, no, not the 1.6L Altis.

Engine Sound
Being a 1.3L engine with 4-Speed Super ECT, you are bound to hear the growling of a 4 month old pup (that too a poodle). If you need excitement of rumbling while revving the engine, move on to something else. But we all want the power of Camaro in a Prius like quietness, which at least on planet earth may not be achievable in the near future. The engine is understandably quiet with no sort of "noise" or "vibrations". But it does sound struggling when under load.

Road Noise
Tyre technology, quality and asphalt/road conditions are the main factors followed by sound deadening or insulation to counter the negative effects. For instance if you are driving on the smoothest of the roads on Eurostars, you will most definitely feel and hear the road molesting your eardrums. But this time, the Acoustic Laminated Wind Screen and good sound deadening/insulation inside the car, the road noise is minimal. Slap some new quality silent and low rolling-resistance rubber on the wheels and you may fall asleep. However, plus sizing the wheels will again render slightly more noise when the larger tyres come into contact with the road, no matter how silent they are.

COG/Road Grip
This Corolla has a high COG which is not a good thing because it translates into excessive body roll and instability during high speeds and aggressive driving. Higher COG means chances of toppling over if pushed hard enough. The 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic is a clear winner in this regard and even surpasses it?s newer 9[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen since the low COG is it's major characteristic in active safety.

Braking
Very nice and reliable. The ABS+BA+EBD is years ahead of what 9[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic is offering at the moment. The 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen used to be known for its excellent braking with regular ABS but that was primarily because of the dynamics of the car including low COG, wheel base and aerodynamics. In 11[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Corolla, I've experienced the brakes to be much better compared to any PKDM in the market right now.

Blind Spots
I thought a tall guy most probably be comfortable while seated in this Corolla but like fellow Pakwheeler Kamran Aslam (@KamranAslam) stated, who happens to be quite tall (and handsome), "you need to be watching out for blind spots all around all the time". This will be mastered by most of the drivers with the passage of time. If you don't have a DVD Touchscreen System already installed, and are willing to get one, don't forget the back view camera. And for heaven's sake don't skimp on its quality and accuracy.

Suspension
Plenty of suspension travel. That's why the comfort everybody brags about in the new Corolla. I think I don't need to stress any more on how rugged and robust the suspension of a Corolla is. Those pot holes and cat eyes which greeted my backbone everyday going to and coming from work were a pain when I used to very, and I mean, very carefully roll over in the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic were no longer noticeable in this new Corolla. Thumbs up for IMC this time in this very department ONLY.
The only gripe is the height of springs/coils that create obnoxious gaps between the tyres and wheel gaps/arches. While it enables you to drive over those "nut breakers" with ease and comfort, you really don't complain until after a detailing session you look at the rear wheels and curse Toyota. I've come to terms with this issue and may probably change over to compatible JDM springs in the far future inshallah to naturally lower the ride.
As for the tyres, soft tyres and stiffer cords greatly increase road grip and while improving handling. I would recommend keeping the tyre pressure 31 PSI for wee bit better road grip.

Anti-Theft System
The anti-theft immobilizer was the only thing keeping me away from Corolla. Surely a deal breaker back then. But there is something known as luck/fate or destiny. Leave it Almighty Allah. Immobilizer may guard against theft but it sure can't stop carjacking, crashes or God forbid untoward incidents. Nature plan cannot fail if there is an immobilizer. IMC could have given this feature as standard or even optional or even in the top of the line Grande. I would have understood and at least acknowledged that step but no immobilizer means the carjacking and car theft cartels DO NOT WANT that to happen otherwise rozee band ho jaygi.

Overall Driving Experience
It's good but not great. It's cool but not thrilling. From Xli to Grande, there is nothing that will tingle your spine or pump the adrenaline to rush through your veins. If you want to have that: 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic, period.
With sane driving and avoiding sudden acceleration/deceleration, sudden braking and aggressive cornering, Corolla is a fun to drive car with plenty of room for forgiveness. It is really fuel efficient. There isn't much road feedback like in the case of 8th Gen Civic. Probably because of the OEM tyres and a numb EPS.

Safety
What safety? No airbags for the rest of us and only one airbag in the up category models. Screw you IMC. But then, I convinced myself that God forbid, what's to come will come in any shape or size. So I use whatever measure are available and for the much missed SRS/Airbag, let's just give out Sadqa and hand over ourselves to Allah.

Luxury and Comfort
I consider this generation of Corolla as luxurious enough for an ordinary Joe like me considering the fact that I live in country where the auto-mobile industry is no less than cartels/lobbies whom you cannot dictate. And that's perfectly fine considering the fact that we can't even formulate a good foreign policy. Anyway, seats are spacious, comfortable and relaxing compared to Civic.
Everything is simple and unmistakably laid out within easy reach of the driver except for the legs (not the driver's specially when he's using a M/T)

Miscellaneous
The EPS is great after coming from the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic. It has improved the driving experience but the steering wheel sometimes requires corrections even while driving straight. If only there was an organ type accelerator pedal like in the 8[SUP]th[/SUP] Gen Civic. And why the heck did Honda strip us of such a lovely feature in the 9[SUP]th[/SUP]Gen Civic?
