If you get in touch with some old morris minor owners - they might help. I saw a picture here on PW where a person somewhere in either pindi or abbotabad would take a new battery gut it out and install it in a period correct old lucas or exide black casing. I personally know for sure that in Karachi there was a battery recycling place in SITE who would have ancient cases too - usually for Rs 10/piece - sold as scrap.

If it was the toolkit PS gives then need not worry - they used to supply with sheet metal spanners - it was hopeless. Buy a tool roll and keep some basic tools with you in the car - buy some quality items though.

Yes I know the place you are talking about in SITE. I used to work for British Oxygen Company (BOC) in West Wharf for 6 years as their maintenance engineer. There were times when I had to use the services of factories in SITE. While roaming about in the area one came across some pretty surprising stuff. I'll be on the lookout for an old battery. Maybe hollow out an old shell and place the modern battery inside :o

Faisal Sb. Thank you for appreciating the work.. BTW I know exactly what your asaying about the Saudi drivers and flat tires. I have lived there for almost 20 years. However, I was on the east coast .... Al-Jubail. Only time I visited Jeddah was for Umra.

Abbasi bhai, regarding battery you can use Dry battery, you will be tension free for filling and leakage of acid... For reference my both rides with Maintenance free battery... Here most of the Maintenance free batteries are in black color and from AC Delco there is a chance you can find Correct year batteries.

No this was with our honda city, though I am buying tools anyways, I have absolutely no experience yet these ustads keep on amazing me with their actions, I think I can do most of the work better than them.

I have great respect for this model of Cressida. Very strong cars. The dry battery is black but it will look even more modern than the one I have at present.

Its really impossible to find like this... I think even we cannot find like this from supplier / manufacturer????? But look of battery is nice and classic style...

these sort of batteries are hard to find now, an oldschool batteryman can make you one like this from individual cells and connecting plates - there were quite a few in Karachi in the 90s and early 2000s. Mostly used by truckies and bus operators.

Getting back to the subject of the thread. the car was test driven today. Hummmm. Mixed comments. Generally quieter. But the rattle/knock sound is still there. So .... did I really need to do all this work? Well the suspension bushes were 65 years old so it is good that I have new ones in there. Plus I have put in the gaiters AND I have ruled out the bushes as a source of the noise. Next I will investigate the shock absorber.. Here is what the assembly looks like - this is from the owner's manual:

And the shock absorber in real life:

Fairly easy to remove two bolts and it is out....

Sure. The tray dim are 7 inches (177.8mm) by 13 inches (330.2mm). However, since this size battery is no longer available, the tray had spacer fitted many years ago to accommodate smaller battery of the same capacity. Present battery is 172mm by 259mm. Height is 224mm. At present I have a EXIDE NS70 battery in place.

Thanks for subscribing. I am not in a position to say if the gaiter will work on your ride. If the leaf spring is of a variable rate type as pictured below, the gaiter may not work as it will get pinched in between the leafs as the vehicle is loaded down and goes over bumps.

Not an issue. If the shock is damaged, I can repair myself or at worst will get a new one from UK :). But first will need to investigate.

Taking a picture from under the car to see the rear chassis is not possible due to the very low road clearance of the car.
