Radio's for Oval window VW's Contd....

The approved radios for the Oval window VW's was the Big M. Motorola product was chosen because it could be fitted in ovals from 1955 to the last model Oval which was 1957. The radios come engraved with the model number on the side. There were 5M, 6M, 7M and 8M model radios. My theory is that the 5 is for the model year 1955 and so on but the 8M would then be for a 1958 model which won't be an oval so the theory falls flat on its face. Anyway it is just a theory but I am happy that they fit thru the model years as the radio I have says 5M on the side (so it would be correct for Shahzeb's Oval but would fit nicely in my car too.)

If I am not wrong, the '57 has a 6V system. If that is correct, the radio will be 6V too. Will the car retain its 6V system or the radio be converted to 12V?

Yes the car came with 6V electrics but I am going to convert it to 12V. I have bought a 12V generator that looks identical to the 6V unit (later years they became bigger so there was a visual sign of a conversion) Other than that everything would be the same. The noticeable difference would be in the lights and starting. I will use a step down convertor to run it on 6V if it shows signs of life otherwise just use it as a display

I am still inclined to keep it as is, even if it does not work. I don't have the motivation but the next owner would not be at a disadvantage if he found everything, even if it does not work, in place.

Finally the big day arrived! The car received its final coat of paint today. The body shell was rolled into the paint booth as Islamabad received its first rain after almost three months. A little more than 2 quarts of paint has been sprayed on the body and doors. The hood and decklid along with the four fenders will be painted separately. This is to ensure that no area, however small, escapes receiving a liberal spray of paint.

I brought a roll of 3M seam sealer tape from the US. (bought off Amazon)

Xulfiqar had suggested me 3M hand glaze on the fresh paint, and it was really wonderful.. I'd recommend you to use it too..
