take half a cup of ATF and mix with quarter cup of kerosene and quarter cup of petrol - leave the zerk fittings there for about a couple of days - and then wash them with clean WD40 or kerosene with a little engine oil,

If you still have some caked dirt, in there make a brush with a piece of frayed cable with a tube on end as a handle - scrape the gunk out, and move the ball inside.

btw do to the truck market and buy some new ones, they are also used on U joints and spring leaf fittings of heavy trucks

This is what a NOS wiper shaft looks like. Have found the correct two pin one, now looking for the single pin one for the other side.

On my way to office this noon, I went to see the 1965 SUNROOF BUG which I have mentioned in my above post.

It was an utter disappointment for two reasons. Foremost was the fact that it was no 1965 SUNROOF Bug, it was a Standard 1968 bug that has been riced (I dare say) by installation of a SUNROOF cut up from some Jap car and with later bug rear fenders in place. This particular bug is owned by PakWheels User Shujaat (PW User ID: shujat26).

Second reason would be the fact that the panel beater's job is clearly less than perfect as you could probably be able to note the flaws from the following pictures of this 1968 bug:

After this particular visit, two things are ascertained. One; at NO cost I am going for even fender work with this panel beater (note the "out of shape" fender finish on the rear fenders in the above pics) and the amount of filler used as could be seen in the close ups (which tells the true story of the panel beating job).

why oh WHY is this car using late model tail lamps???? AAAAGHHHH!!!

it's at times liek this that i love your car even more, you actually took the time to do it all right. i showed a friend (restoring a 69) your thread and after seeing what all you've done he's realized that there is more to life than metallic paint and a chrome engine.

you forgot about the oval window ragtop,...

BTW after seeing the wonders you did on your wheels, i've decided to roll up my sleeves and fit up the original 14 inch 5-lug steel wheels which came with my thing from the factory (@All these rims are ultra rare in 14 inch). thanks for the inspiration and the amazing thread. keep up the excellent work.

Now that is some good news that my thread has inspired another fellow Vdubber to think/see beyond the obvious.

We have an OVAL RAGTOP BUG in MULTAN? How the hell I dont know this? Why haven't I seen it EVER? I think I have been drunk for all these 31 yrs of my age if its there and I haven't seen/known its existence all this time.

I was just going through your THING Restoration folder; I liked everything about her but the wheels. For a moment, I honestly thought to ask you about why the alloys and why not the steel stock wheels. So now it gives me a pleasure knowing that THING is soon going to receive her Stock wheels on her.

Oh you are welcome but we all share eachother's inspirations to go about our VWs. We hope to see the 14" Stock Wheels Restoration and going back on THING soon. Keep us all posted and Good Luck.

oops, my bad, when i read that your car was the oldest in town i thought you meant in pakistan,... (old age is getting to me).

as for the wheels on the thing, yeah i hated hte alloys on her too but luckily the conversion isn't drilled into the drums but rather just an adapter plate. the hardest thign will be to find 14 inch tyres which fit and maintain the original size of the stock tyres (no longer available in PK).
