I think the 1kd injector problems are a wee bit exaggerated. I have a 2003 surf 1kd. came to pakistan with 50K kms on the clock (im sure the meter was tampered with) has run over 40k kms since on the same injectors (i have them checked every 6 months)... participated in rallies, used as a daily runner...never missed a beat. Just make sure you put in fuel from a pump thats used frequently, liqui moli diesel purge every other fill, ORIGINAL fuel filter (in my opinion this is the biggest Boo Boo most people make) and you should be good. I would suggest you get in touch with Babar Yousafzai from frontier 4x4 he transplanted one in his 60 series LC.

I wouldnt put it in a 90s surf tho.. the 1uz is a better option. Qasim Saidhi our resident rally driver has put one in his 2nd gen hilux kaikra and we took it for offroading over the weekend... and it is quite the monster. it was gobbling up obstacles which an 80 series LC and a y60 patrol were struggling on :). if you want to stick to the 1kd, put it in a 40/60/70 series.

Just found this old thread. So @badr313 which engine did you finally end up getting? The 1UZ in my opinion is the best bang available for the buck right now - 261 hp and 268lbs/ft torque for about 100k if not less. The vvti model is even peppier and slightly less thirsty. My daily driven 1UZ CJ7's tested fuel economy figures are 6.5km/L urban and 12+km/L highway.

If you're really interested in a PUNGA project, why don't you go for an old Mercedes Diesel engine? OM606.912 would be a great choice

1KD is a great engine to start playing . here in Toyota we have not done any sort of recall on injectors after 2009 model and now toyota have more than 10 years of producing this 1KD engine. very difficult to find a low km engine in 2nd hand market.

2x 1KD Ftv under use 2007 one is at 375000 and 2nd at 155000 bothas good as new 10kmpl avg mpg only regular oil change no maintainance issues yet 2007 import

1 kd is best engine toyota has produced just ensure that you get your vehicle ECU Calibration software updated with the newer version and you are fine to go

Hello Gentlemen! I know this is an old thread but I'm trying to look for serious assistance with my 2011 Hilux Invincible aka (UK) model.

I bought it used about a year back and since then, havent been able to bring it upto par (seems like a case of poor maintenance on part of the previous owner). Initially I had major issues with its DPF (diesel particulate filter), since it is Euro-5 version, hence it has very painfully sensitive exhaust treatment system, which in our environment / fuel quality is a nightmare to maintain. Anyways, I somehow managed to tackle that issue.

But now the latest issue seems to be that my mech tells me that i need to replace my injectors an diesel pump (to address loss of power and smoking). And that you can imagine is a 'nuskha' worth $$$.

So if anyone is still following this thread. SOS Brothers!

Amin, please take your vehicle to the Toyota dealership for service and repair. The D4D motor is already a sensitive piece of machinery and the additional Euro spec emissions equipment makes it even more fickle. Troubleshooting it is definitely out of the scope of the average mechanic as the job requires specialized equipment. Even if you don't get it repaired there, please at least get the correct diagnosis from them. Are you located in Karachi?

Hmm ... you are right abt it not being every random mechs cup of tea. Yes, I'm in Khi.

You are spot on abt the emissions control system on these euro 5 diesels; I've had a fair bit of nightmare with its DPF till I finally reached a workable solution.

The only alternative I know of other than the dealership is Road Runner near Tooba masjid in DHA phase 1. Ask for Amjad the head mechanic. He knows his stuff and their rates are very reasonable too. Steer clear of Khan Autos and 4x4 Motors. They're nothing but no talent hacks and rip off artists.
