Hi,

I tested drive a prado 2001 today (previously I owed 96prado)

In general prado is in good condition but I am concerned with back compression which is quite common in all prados I am looking which are available in Karachi. Other concerned is small black smoke which is not normal in 1kd engine.

I contacted Toyota and they told me replacement parts of 1kd is expensive than 1kz engine

I am now confused what to do. demand for prado 2001/2004 reg is 21 L. What price should be added to rebuild this engine. Would replacement of engine in near future or rebuild would be good idea.

Can anyone also suggest me price of good 1kd engine in quetta / peshawar?

I wont recommend you to go for a 1KD engine to be honest.

For that kind of money, you better buy a Prado that does not require engine change and if you cannot find a Prado in that kind of a condition for 21L then I am sure you will find a Surf that is in mint conidtion. Have you considered 1996 Multi Valve Land Cruiser? Those are after ll the ultimate in off roading but its hard to find one that is in outclass condition.

Hit here all,
If your engine is don e only 65k and its gone bad, only wise solution is to rebuild it as 1kz engine could be overhauled for more than 5 times with no problem at all . All the original parts are available for reasonable price, complete overhaul would take about 60000 rs. But keep in mind that the engines which you are getting from shershah and quetta do also have more than 1lacs km on them, so after fitting them on your prado they will not last longer than 10 to 15k miles.
I have rebuilt my 96 prado's 1kzte for first time and went to Khunjarab pass to china border with 5 passengers and all luggage all the way from karachi to china border in july 2007 when the summer is on its full throttle.
It is not wise to buy second hand engine with no prior history as this will prove to be waste of money after some time.

It was arranged by my mechanic in Peshawar. He deals in all kind of engines for land cruisers etc. First of all 1KD has a complex wiring system so not all of the mechanics can fix it. It has more sensors, even turbo is run by a seperate control unit. Secondly, Because of our Diesel quality, There are tons of failed 1KD and 2KD engines in Pakistan. I myself saw almost brand new SUVs and Pickups with D4D engine parked in workshops with injector/fuel pump problems and even overhauling, more often then any other engine of the same year.

Secondly, I totally agree with Sajidd that why buy a Prado with already weak engine? and Multi valve Vx ltd Land cruiser is a gem infront of 90 series Prados in every manner.

shahbaz_79, I knew that my 1KZ engine can be overhauled but I wanted to go for a better engine as 1KZ non EFI engines have less efficiency and low power. So I went for 1KD and after that I swapped 1KZTE (EFI) latest one which has an Electronic Throttle instead of old cable and its also water to air intercooled. I also changed the transmission from Manual to Auto. One thing that surprised me was that automatic transmission's acceleration is faster than manuals. Even with 33 inch tyres, if I give it full throttle from standing still, The LC tries to go sideways.

the new web interface is good..

the condition of 1kd fitted is not that bad, that would require immediate change.

Like Toyota advised me that you do not need to change whole engine in coming years. some replacement can do the job well.

i have a vigo. driven it 1 165,000 kms so far. through all sorts of terrain all over pakistan. from skardu to the cholistan desert. no problems so far. yes commonrail engines are vulnerable due to the high sulphur content in the diesel we get but if u make sure u change all filters and oils on time u should be ok. changing the diesel fuel filter on time is of utmost importance esp in winters due to water acumulation.

• the 1kd is twice as fuel efficient as the 1 kz and muchhh more powerful at the same time. and the 1 kd is wayyyy quiter than any other conventional diesel and the throttle response will always bring a smile to your face !! i guarantee that!!
