i am a big Canon fan myself, however, at times during outdoor photography, you need to test with a few types before you find the right combination. being the most expensive forms of photography, outdoors offer challenges like no other environment. even the distance you have from the action affects the results.
i was using a nikkor tele lens and a wide angle. also was using two nikon bodies, pro series also shifting lenses all the time. with a pro flash.
in your case if you want to use your existing camera, as expensive it may get, grab hold of L-series lenses rather then a simple lens. tele in canon comes in both simple and L series as well. so you will also have a choice, monetarily.
