If the ecu does not think it's misbehaving, then the answer is no.

It may be generating false signals and causing the ecu to think there is excessive knock (such as a bad fuel condition) and is simply compensating.

Since you have replaced so many other things might as well try this too...

Issue is that I can't find a knock sensor. Tried calling a few spare parts dealers in Montgomery road. Any leads for this?

u can ask ur mechanic to try and unplug the knock sensor n check if CEL turn on,

I think you will have to visit Montgomery Road yourself. Take the part number and a picture with you. Best Solution is to take the sensor with you. Our shopkeepers still operate this way.

Last resort is a dealership, but their prices are through the roof.

so i just got the knock sensor changed with a kabli one.

2 days down, so far the car is performing a lot better.

though i can hear some noise still coming from the front driver side. Not sure if its an exhaust leakage or some kind of engine noise.

Anyone knows where i can get the exhaust inspected? i am guessing the exhaust manifold warp is slowly coming back.

last time i got the exhaust fixed, they fixed the warp by hammering it down from where they seemed is necessary and putting in a new metal gasket.

Why do i think its not the exhaust, because the noise (knock or pinging) completely vanishes sometimes, and the throttle is more responsive. but as soon as i restart the car. the noise comes back with lowered performance also.

Now im guessing it could be something that is effecting ignition timing (that works sometimes flawlessly and sometimes its stuck).

Could it be the VVTI solenoid? or some other electronic ? Because its clearly an On/off situation highly possible related to timing in my opinion

can b a lot of things, vvti solenoid is located on the timing side, just a bolt holding it, u can clean its grip n try,

best way is to scan it n finding wats going on overall, if u find it of electrical, then wud be visible in scan results, other way is hit n trial

In knock sensor case, the cost was 1k for sensor and 500 rs labor.

The knock sensor was changed (since there was a knock sensor circuit high code).

The performance is a lot better! the throttle response (specially with more passengers) is evidently better.

But there is still some noise (along with power lag) that comes and goes frequently (but the change happens only when the engine is switched off and on). So thats why i mentioned my guess is something that is a timing / electric issue.

Aoa everyone.

Long time no see.

The issue still remains as I have been occupied at work.

UPDATE: So yesterday i decided to unplug a few things in the engine bay to clean the electric plugs/connections with some contact cleaner.

1. I cleaned the MAF sensor plug + the sensor itself
2. Cleaner the injector connections and coil connections
3. Cleaned the camshaft position sensor connection only (couldn't take out the sensor with my cheap brittle T wrench)
4. Cleaned the oxygen sensor connection
5. Cleaned the VVTI solenoid connection

Since the knocking / timing fluctuation issue was thought to be something relevant to the VVTI in our opinion, I thought of leaving the VVTI solenoid disconnected.

And then i drove the car, and still am driving even today. Well i only drove the car for several KMs since im at work again, i think the knocking is gone or atleast reduced.

What could this mean? Any ideas?

1. Could it be an issue with the solenoid itself? (I checked the solenoid with direct connection the the battery few months ago and it operates that way)
2. Could it be an issue with the electric current through the wire/plug that comes out of the wiring harness that gives power to the solenoid?
3. or could it be a stuck VVTI Cam phaser?

Will appreciate any expert opinion. Yes Im trying again to fix this knocking and limp mode once again

when u start a cold engine ecu dump fuel in engine to make it for optimum temperature. ignition timing is advance. after reaching optimum temperature thermostat open and coolant runs through radiator to keep optimum temperature.
now if thermostat is removed car never comes to optimum temperature and car runs on advance timing and fuel is dumped continuously.
to check thermostat u have to remove to big hose pipes from engine side insert finger in those holes if yur fore finger moves easily in those holes then there is no thermostat in them better ask mechanic to do that
if i am not wrong corolla engines have 2 thermostats

seems normal. not an evident difference between summer and winter.
Stays slightly lower than half way, which is normal.
