If the engine has a poor low end torque (around 1500 rpms) then it will have to rev higher to move the car from stand still and that equals poor fuel economy and if it has good torque initially then it can move the same vehicle with relatively less fuel hence better fuel economy.

This is why I suggested more gears because low ratio first and second should give that low-speed torque needed to push the car.

And 1.2 not being offered in city doesnt make it a taboo. 1.3 was also not offered in corolla elsewhere (said by IMC CEO himself in an interview to Suneel munj) but still much underpowered xli/gli were a massive success.

Why are you using a wrong from Toyota to justify a wrong by Honda? 1.3 was a success for the price point, and due to bigger category sedan comfort. City 1.3 was known more for its economy, and this is why the new 1.2 needs to fill that role effectively, because the 1.3 Yaris it is up against has more hp, and an already established excellent economy and a good CVT option. And the middle 1.3 Ativ has good features too. So barebone and struggling 1.2 might not be enough.

Why it's always needed a price increase to create a gap between two brand cars. Why not the 1st brand keeps the price at a lower reasonable level. In Pakistan its a norm now to increase the car prices every month.

Around 60 at 1500 rpms. Good enough?

why are we looking for torque at 1500 rpm for an NA car? A small car like city even civic with normal foot from stand still will go to 2-2.5 rpm and then normalize, while cruising city is normaly above 3k at 100.( if i remember correctly the aspire 1.5 used to be aeound 3.2 or 3.4 at 120-130, its been a long time i can be wrong though). even if u creep the car with no gas pedal pressure the car will still go to 1-1.5k to pull its weight, but that would be one slow moving object.

In city traffic (stop/go) its normal for an NA petrol car to go upto 2-3 rpm with normal foot. The city 1.2 wont have any issues with mileage in city traffic, it will have incresed fuel usage only at motorway cruising speed when the 2nd valve will open at higher rpms.

it's going to be cvt and I believe it's cruising RPM will be not very high.. my passo moda is 1000cc and at 120km/HR rpm is less than 3 as I remember.

Its not about wrong or right. Its about offering a competitive product. You yourself said that selling point of corolla 1.3 was its comfort even though it was underpowered and here honda is trying to offer a more fuel economical alternative to the potential buyers of yaris 1.3. And who said that 1.2 will be barebone or without any decent features? You have a right to critisize but atleast let the car be revealed first.

Kindly dont just assume things. Lets wait and see what final product Atlas will launch

No i dont have it but it is more efficient than the 1.2 honda engine. Compression ratio is significantly higher​

I assume you think the 11.5:1 compression ratio is being used like most of the rest of the world for Yaris. I am willing to bet the local variant is the 10.5:1 compression ratio variant as with the higher ratio, we would be hearing a lot about the knocking issues with the local non-hi octane petrol.

Yaris 1.3 has 1329cc. Toyota going forward Atlas going for 1200cc.

The reduced displacement throughout the world is accompanied by turbo charging almost always. No where in the world do they give engines with reduced power than the previous engines.

The fuel economy being the same for 5th gen city for 1.3 and 1.5 in manual variants, and auto 1.5 having better economy than the 1.3 auto is proof that small engines are not guaranteed to give better fuel economy. Idk how people are touting the cvt to be a savior transmission for the 1.2, it still has a torque converter, so the inherent powertrain inefficiency is still there. There is a reason why 1.3 was discontinued for city throughout the world for 6th gen.

Indian ARAI fuel economy ratings show amaze 1.2 manual and city 6th gen 1.5 manual to have approximately the same fuel economy, even though the amaze is a decent bit lighter and smaller than the city. The city 1.2 cvt will be an especially pathetic car all factors considered.

Yes lol, amazing seeing people believe local cars getting especially underpowered engines exclusively has any other reason besides pandering to the local morons with a weird small engine fetish. I mean I've seen many idiots explaining those weeaboo trash NA 660cc auto JayDeeEms as "bohot bhaagti hai yawwr, bohot taqatwar japaani injine hai". The city 1.2 will feel like a sports car in comparison to those 660ccs. No wonder people will fall in love with its "tabaahi pick".

Atlas now has shown enough lows so I am almost not expecting anything professional or good from them. There has been enough drama. Based on what Atlas has given us so far with the new City launch, my assumptions are rather generous. I was afraid there might be a face-lifted fifth gen under the covers .

The 1.3 in corolla XLi/GLi, I have always heard it shouting, be it manual or auto. Indus gave such a small engine is also not good, but at least they gave an alternate to City in that segment, and now they have Yaris which is a good car.

The best solution for Honda in my opinion is to either retain the current 1.3, or source a 1.3 from somewhere else like Mitsubishi/Nissan, but they won't try this hard for a small market like ours.

And yes, CVT should help a bit due to it being able to go to any gear ratio between minimum and maximum, and if tuned well, City might turn out to be reasonable. But at the end of the day, if there is not enough hp, either fuel economy or acceleration will suffer.

Woo thats a tight margin. Specially in smaller cities where fuel quality is mixed. If the car is rated for 91, well one must find a good pump.
