My bro has bought a Civic 2008 (simple version) yesterday, today we took her out for a drive and the check engine light was on (the one on the right side of battery sign), we tried to convert it to petrol but the light was still there. I was wondering if you guys have encountered something like this?

The car has CNG installed in it. Secondly when I drove the vehicle, I found the steering very hard as compared to my Vitz 06, is this normal?

steering is normal but i sugest u get ur car complete checked from 3s dealer and does the light ocurs on petrol

Engine Light turns on when there is recent error...In routine inspection; they hook the car with computer on which the engine errors are reported...the operator can tell you why engine light is on. If its something serious; you should get it fixed asap.

I will suggest to go with routine inspection first instead of going there with engine light issue..as they will charge you almost same or more. The operator can tell you in detail and you can decide yourself how to proceed further.
