Umm, its a diesel. Horespower is never priority in a diesel because it has a huge compression ratio. What matters is torque. The intercooled version of the 4d56 provides nearly 45 more Newton Meters of torque (or "Torques" as Jeremy Clarkson would call it.). In a 3 door vehicle, that equates to one more small car worth of torque. Furthermore, an intercooler is so very necessary on a forced induction vehicle for reasons that will take pages to write about.
I have driven both, and if you boost the intercooled version just right, its not a lazy pony and will surprise you and the bigger boys standing next to you on a traffic light. Just make sure you don't trail a 3500 v6 DOHC Mitsu powerplant at 150kph for a few hours on the motorway with offroad gears
To the OP. You have taken the right approach, make it more comfortable and pleasing to sit in, and then worry about torque and horsepower, which is a never ending debate anyways
Congrats on your new found love, it will always be the one I love most anyways (see avatar).
