I have been reading your posts and pictures. Especially the one at Blind Lake. Masha Allah, you've got lovely kids.
I have been traveling to GB area, the last visit was in July 2010.
I am planning a visit in early June this year Insha Allah with family. This would be the first time I will cross the Babusar Pass and hit Chillas. Can you please update me about the road condition from Besham-Chilas-Gilgit & Babusar-Chilas Routes with road condition and timings. I will be using a 4x4.

Brother, it is a little too early to say something about Naran-Babusar-Chilas route. In early June, the route may be closed or may be not.

The detail of Besham-Chilas-Gilgit route and beyond is as under:

Mansehra to Thakot bridge: 94 km (2 hours and 30 minutes) (mettled road, most part of the road in a very good condition)

Thakot bridge to Besham: 27 km (one hour) (mettled road but not in a good condition)

Besham to Chilas: 198 km (5 hours and 15 minutes) (mettled road but not in a good condition)

Chilas to Raikot bridge: 55 km (1 hour and 30 minutes) (mettled road but not in a good condition)

Raikot bridge to Jaglot: 33 km (30 minutes) (mettled road, excellent condition)

Jaglot to Skardu: 175 km (around 6 hours) (Narrow mettled road, not in a good condition)

Jaglot to Gilgit: 45 km (around 1 hour) (mettled road, excellent condition)

Gilgit to Kareemabad (Hunza): 100 km (2 hours) (mettled road, excellent condition)

Kareemabad (Hunza) to Hoper Glacier (Nagar): 20 km (45 minutes) (16 km mettled road and 4 km unpaved)

Kareemabad (Hunza) to Attabad lake: 18 km (30 minutes) (excellent mettled road except around 300 metres portion unpaved)

Gilgit to Gahkuch (district headquarters of Ghizar): 75 km (1 hour and 45 minutes) (mettled road, good condition)

Gahkuch to Khalti lake (PTDC Gupis): 45 km (1 hour 20 minutes) (mettled road, good condition)

Gupis to Hundur village (Yasin Valley): 40 km (1 hour 30 minutes) (mettled road, not bad)

Gupis to Phandar Valley: 56 km (2 hours 15 minutes) (mettled road, good condition except at two or three places due to landslides)

After going through your recent discoveries, I have come to a conclusion that my thirst for exploring northern areas can only be accomplished if I get transferred there for atleast 2-3 years,

1. I went to Gilgit, Hunza and Khunjerab Pass in June 2004 with my University friends,
2. second time I spent my honeymoon in May 2008 incl. Giligit, Hunza, Khujerab Pass, Skardu, Shigar etc.,
3. last year I explored Astore, Rama, Deosai, Skardu, Khaplu, Shigar, Hunza and way back on my own SUV

but I am still thirsty to explore alot, my eagerness is increasing day by day as I come to know about more discoveries.

We are blessed with utmost beauty we should be thankful to almighty Allah and we should explore as much as we can rather than spending money on foriegn trips.

Bird hunting is banned and for fishing one must get a permit from Fisheries Department.
