hile searching for a suitable car, I saw more than 15 cars, only one of them had not been in an accident while all the others had been in some sort of accident (not major). Finally settled for a car that had been in a minor accident but it was an acceptable compromise considering the condition of the car. A few weeks back, the Mira's passenger side seatbelt would not retract. I opened the cover and discovered that the seatbelt had been repaired locally.
These sealtbelts have pre-tensioners which deploy in case of an accident. After the pre-tensioner has deployed, the seat belt will not retract and needs to be replaced along with the airbag (if it has deployed). However, its nothing that our desi jugaar baaz mechanics cannot solve. They compromise the safety of the system and then the dealers make a nice new 4 grade auction sheet for the car.
I replaced the seatbelt with another one from Bilal Ganj after verifying that the pre-tensioner on the replacement belt had not deployed. The point is that people who go around saying that they bought a JDM and it has airbags, probably don't realize that just because it has an SRS sign on the dash, it does not mean that the car has a working airbag.[/QUOTE]
The tensioners jam in case of an accident when the airbags blow. And most of the time they replace driver not passanger
