Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) provides pneumatic and electrical power for the Airbus A380 with the PW980A auxiliary power unit, designed and manufactured in Longueuil, Que. P&WC is a United Technologies (NYSE:UTX) company.
The Airbus A380 began commercial daily service between Singapore?s Changi Airport and Australia?s Sydney Airport, equipped with the Quebec-built APU. The PW980A, which is the most powerful APU in commercial service, is performing flawlessly and accumulating several hours of operation each day.
The PW980A, rated at over 1,800 horsepower, sets new standards for reduced noise and emissions. It incorporates the latest technology advances in areas such as materials and engine controls to offer levels of dependability, durability and efficiency expected by major airlines. Hamilton Sundstrand, a United Technologies company, also collaborated on the program.
The APU in use on the A380 is the PW 980A APU. It is the world?s most powerful APU, providing 1.3MW, which is 20 percent more powerful than the next largest APU in service. The APU primarily provides air to power the Analysis Ground Station (AGS) on the ground and to start the engines. The AGS is a semi-automatic analysis system of flight data that helps to optimise management of maintenance and reduce costs. The APU also powers electric generators which provide auxiliary electric power to the aircraft.
