
This was one of the symbols of the Luftwaffe's air superiority in the early days of the second world war; the Messerschmitt Bf 109. It was fast and agile, and utilized some of the more advanced techniques in airframe design. The power came from Daimler-Benz DB 600 series engines which were one of the early successful applications of direct fuel injection. This also allowed it to outmaneuver the spitfire in certain cases where the fuel supply of carburetor based engines,present in the spitfire, was interrupted during a negative G maneuver.
