Thats bloody expensive, your mechanic that is. When I was living in North London, I had my transmission replaced [emoji22] for a princely sum of 700 pounds in labour plus used parts.

I also had my complete engine rebuilt recently in Jeddah for about a grand in sterling including parts and labour

Sadly every model has some typical design compromises, which come up after some time.

Luckily, my friend with 2000 E38 is still going strong with his car, which has now crossed 315,000 kms. So thats BMW for you. Although, he takes very good care of his car.

I wont be able to tell you if this car had such a big mileage on it based on its external looks or even the ride.

That sounds good! 315k kms is a lot and if the car is still doing well then its a good sign! I am a huge BMW fan and probably will be buying one next year sometime. i can buy one right now but im too much afraid of buying one which is not in a good condition. so i guess its better to save up for a while n buy a newer one. The ones i love are 335i coupe but thats too expensive! will probably get a 330i or sumthing. preferably in manual even though its too difficult to find (and later, sell) a manual transmission here.

Yes it is I don't know of much mechanics here and due to service history have to visit bmw dealership so they charge 120 pound an hour rebuilding an engine would take here at least 3 4 days thus very expensive job regardless of parts. Dpf change 1700 even oil change costs 180 now.

I too love 335 but in uk prices are almost same the problem is insurance over here, transmission wise yes it is difficult to sell manual here also.

A close friend of mine had a '08 335i coupe with a manual in Dubai. This one was a personal import from Spain and the expat sold it at the burst of the economic bubble to my friend while leaving Dubai. It was in mint condition, plus had a manual on it, I just loved the way it pushed deep, something my car does not, even though both are 3.0.

He very recently sold it, and moved to something more exotic, a Porsche 911. So you will find manuals from time to time, but its a rare fish.

On a side note, if you need some help with mechanics, there is an excellent garage on the verge of Sharjah Industrial area, called Jano Mechanics. The guy is an Iranian and expert on all BMs new or old. I visited his workshop once to have my car checked, while I was in Dubai last year, and believe me when I tell you, his garage has more cars booked in than a typical BM dealership. Plus his service charges are quite reasonable.

I may even have his phone number somewhere on receipts, should you need it.

If you go on to specialist forums like 5series.net, bimmerfest, bmwland and the like, you will find a directory of listed local mechanics in your locality, who are trusted and cost effective.

Prices quoted above aren't that bad for dealer prices but I personally avoid dealers like anything.There are always specialists around who are good but a lot cheaper than main dealer.

Yeah i ve heard ppl crying over insurance rates in UK. i checked the rates n i think on a bmw 540i 2002 they were offering 4k pounds!!! or may be it was an m5 of the same year.... still too high!

hey did that friend of urs sold it just like a month of two ago? i think i saw that car for sale on dubizzle. Spain import rings a bell. anyways, 335i indeed kicks really hard n urs doesnt because the 335i has twin turbo engine manuals account for may be 5% of cars here. People show no interest in cars over here in ME. cars are neglected, often left to rot and no one buys manuals for the sake of having fun because manuals are fun on tight winding roads of which we have none here we only see bigggg 6-8 lanes highways where people put cars in cruise control and relax... not my cup of tea personallY!
