Alto doesn't give a good average on petrol, after many tries we decided to convert to cng, vxr 2005. Max on petrol was 12 km/l but it went to 15 on highways. CNG will wreck your engine, but it is the only alternative. Might be that the newer one would give a higher mileage. It is probably the most underated 1000cc car. Mechanics are aware of everything as well as cheap materials are available in market. Even though i own a golden, i personally like the olive green color. You should go for it, but be sure to take a trusted mechanic with you.
