charge the unit with pressure gauges and very carefully check the high and low pressures along with air temperatures on both sides. Please make sure the unit is vacuumed out before charging the system.
Before you try that - why not take some pictures of it - someone might have seen it here. e.g. I had an old philco window air conditioner with side vent air handler in my house, it was a real heavy beast, 18000 BTU, Bristol branded piston type compressor, 6 pass evaporator and 5 pass condenser.
Later on I bought a used and non working Hitachi A/C unit which had arabic writing on it and it was missing its specification sticker, it was an exact copy of the philco unit - charged it with the same amount as the philco and it worked real sweet - It took more R22 compared to regular window units like LG, Haier etc.
