This customer wanted to replace the timing belt + w/pump and we agreed to take on the job.
We use only Gates timing belt kits which were approx. 25% more expensive than the kit the customer wanted.
Customer wanted to buy it himself, then we cannot give any guarantee on the job since it's not in the system that we placed the order. Wrote that on the receipt which the customer willingly signed, knowing he saved 1000 kroner on the parts...( Woohoo).
Did the job, 1 year later, timing belt bolt broke. The person driving the car was the 3rd owner, 1st owner sold to someone else who then sold it to this unfortunate person..
The main owner wanted us to fix this, we check the historic and voila - Customer brought parts himself. Note - The mechanic who did the job is not a pappu person , very experienced with VAG cars and is our towing hitch / T-belt expert. Quick, effective and very careful.
Got the car transported from 600km away, took off the cylinder head and ouch, need new cylinder head and all the parts that are in there, including 4 new diesel injectors ( 95,000 rupees for 1 from Audi!!).
The owner got shock and wanted to take it on the insurance and just pay 10,000 kroner deductible ( 1.25 lac ) and we agreed. I then made an insurance claim, got it accepted, and have placed an order for the parts. The lucky person in this case is the new owner, brand new cylinder head, new injectors and whatnot!
We have changed maybe 100 timing belts this year and always used Gates. Our supplier is confident it's a good product and gives reimbursements quickly as well. Now the owners insurance will take the case forward to the supplier of the Goodyear T-belt kit .... that't not my business
