Auto industry stumbles due to closure of production plants

I had a 3-day mindfu*k marathon with uncle @Xulfiqar in another thread where he ranted on and on but failed to answer these questions.

-Why arent his buddies the local assemblers able to export even a single car?

-Why havent they been able to localize despite decades of unfair advantages?

Cant argue with someone whose mind is actually drugged by words like cartel, mafia, don, illuminati etc.

I also ask the same question on this board - if you rummage through old papers "dawn" of 1990 and 91 - when IMC was laying its first bricks, the press conferences confirmed that it was setup to export assembled cars - it never happened as the assembly line till today is a joke. The add ons and sub manufacturers that were setup to support them are also stuck with low volume due to lack of skilled employees.

Too bad that the country they are in are so useless that when cell phones were on the boom - the country banned them in the name of security.

Important point everyone needs to understand here is that these plants are not shutting or closing down, they are just halting/pausing/slowing the production according to the slow demand, that's it. This is normal. The same companies were surviving and profiting when they were selling similar number of cars some years ago, they are still profiting and will continue to do so. They didn't die in 2008/09 and they won't die now. This is just a phase. They are using media and scare mongering to squeeze out benefits from the govt and it's pretty pathetic to see pakwheels becoming a part of it.

I am actually agreeing with you, but also said that because there is no "qualified supervisory body" to oversee manufacturing and tech industry.

They just did what any business would do - bargain with dollars. The only way to curtail it was to lay self made replacements first. Didnt happen. Now enjoy your red bull.

They are using this to restructure the employee wages too.

Today's headline of Business Recorder is very ominous regarding future economic conditions of Pakistan. It seems ADB has joined in with these auto makers for scaremongering and pressurizing current government.

Prediction of recession by @Nabs sounds plausible if one sees macro indicators and forecast reports of independent institutions.

Part of the reason we’re in this mess is our industry never focused on export. They were happy to milk the local market and instead pressured the government to eradicate any competition from imports. As a result they never felt any need to be competitive globally.
If we had exportable products the devaluation of our currency would’ve actually helped make our exports even more attractive.

Even now we are seeing the same import substitution model and local producers are still campaigning for protection from imports.

I once asked this question from a man who could have taken his business multinational and he didnt. I said British expansion in colonial era was driven by East India company which in fact had bigger military might than the UK back in those times. Even the crown didnt mess with the company. There is a worldwide slowdown or downturn in auto sales but what is happening in the pak market is bizarre. I really feel for the promoters of Hyundai Nishat and Kia Lucky 'cause they'll be the ones holding the bag in the end. Well, who goaded them to get into this situation , i wonder?, Someone from pakwheels?.
