Where exactly were they looted as the nearer side or the entrance side has lot of hotels and dhabbas so looting isn't possible at this side so i believe the looting must have happened as the far side on the path which leads to anso lake trek.Again there are settlements of local ppl on that side and a tent shop also. So my point ur guys must be at some isolated side of the lake AFTER DARK.
I had visited the area just before ramazan and stayed at the hotel at the lake (the one which has concrete walls and roof in other words pakka hotel) and had a lengthy talk with the owner of that hotel (as he was carrying a weapon and asked him why he is).he told me of such an incident has happened 2 weeks ago when some campers got looted at night (around 2 AM ) and the victims came to him after daylight giving ample time to looter to escape. the hotel owner's instance was had the victims come earlier for help he could have blocked the road and searched everyone going back (plz keep in mind that there is only one way in and one way out of the lake, the other paths are too lengthy and dangerous).
IMO the critical mistake which most of the visitors and 'newbie','wannabe' trekkers do is, they make a lot of noise and shour-sharaba (music on high volume, dance , unnecessary lights etc) while visiting or camping which gathers unnecessary attention hence making them a potential target. bhai ap nature enjoye karne aye hein tou let the nature speak to you rather then spreading the noise of 'sheila ki jawani', disrupting the peace and tranquility of surroundings. Agar apko buhat zour ka music aya hova hai tou use headphones.
secondly, always hire a local weather you need his services or not. You don't know how much beneficial he could be if any such thing happens.
3rdly, use lights inside your tent and never wave around the torches while outside.
And when u r in Rome do as the Romans do, I have stayed places known for getting robbed and looted and where the nearest soul is at at least a day's walk but Alhamdulillah nothing bad ever happened. Just because me and my team and other guys like me who do regular trekking go by the local rules.

without music ppl think they gona die. Once me and my friends were coming from ANSOO lake and it was around 9pm. we were told that now its almost impossible to find any jeep around here, but luckily we found one. on the way back, all friends said "Tape on karo". when we get closer to "Glacier" the driver stopped the jeep, stopped the tape, and recited Kalima. when started jeep, all said "Tape on karo". Driver said " O bhai, hamain nai pata yahan say sahi guzartay hain ya nai, hum TAPE on nai karay ga" and then when my friends (i came here before so i knew that its gona be dangerous at that time, but they did not know) saw glacier in jeep light, all of sudden i could hear breaths as well, and Allah Allah kar kay glacier cross kiya aur ja kar phir khoob bisti ki kay ganay lazmi nai her jagah.

i am not against camping but if u r doing at such an area esp at night time n again esp when u know there r theft reports then its a plain stupidity
the best u can do for safety is carry a gun wid u

9mm is the very simple solution of all these situations due to current condition of whole world it is highly recommend that put any kind of arm for the safety of yourself if you don't able to carry that than don't go on adventure trips keep your self in a safe shelter just visit places in a day time and come back to hotel.

although there is no connection between tourism and weapons but it seems that it will be a part of tourist gears. That is really sad coz we go there to refresh minds and souls and to see original nature . If such kind of threats start prevailing there then very few of us will continue this activity and in a result more frustration will prevail in our youth

i was jst thinking that k agr hum aansoo k liye naran se early nikal jayen to? but at dudipatsar we have to do camps i dont think so there is some other option... is it ?

No such problem for fairy meadows and nanga parbat.

one gun vs many..? result a huge damage to your self and to others... it is impossible to resist against Ak47's with your one 9mm it can be harmful suppose if they open fire then just bcz of a one gun put many lifes in danger in those remote areas so i dont recommend anyone a weapon or such things...

Apparently all isolated places of Kaghan Valley looks unsafe. But Army will definitely do something coz their ppl are also under attack. So put any plan about kaghan on next year and go straight to fairy meadows , adding any other location like astore/rama/deosai/rupal/minimarg (any from these) will be wonderful. what about Rakapshi base Camp , I haven't done it but I hope it will be good alternate for your disappointment about dudipatsar tour. Regards.

Yes...as mentioned by Kashif..It will be better to postpone Dudipatser and aanso lake area till next year..You can go ahead towards fairy meadows or another good option is to go to upper neelum valley and shounter valley i.e chitta katha lake etc.
