Best Gear oil (transmission oil)

I have a brand new Honda City. I'm using Zic transmission oil (red bottle). After discovering low oil level (company fault), I had the original oil flushed out and replaced it with Zic. The transmission feels smooth with no grinding.

Yes, it is Gear 5. This is what I bought:-

It cost me Rs.450 per 1 litre of bottle (Rs. 1800 in all 4 bottles)

The engine and trans oils are in separate compartments, so no worries there.

I would suggest the Mobil 1 75W-90 full synthetic in your car, changed every 75,000 km, but immediately if having driven through deep standing water that floods the engine compartment.

If a car has driven though deep standing water, it would have harmed the transmission oil? Does that hold true in case of A/T cars as well? I have a Civic VTi 2000 model and I've been noticing a jerk of late, and now that I think about it, I did drive it through some deep standing water recently.

Would you say this is the reason? And what ATF would you recommend for the mentioned car?

Even mineral oil can last that long in a manual trans, but I would suggest changing that at about 30 or 40 thousand kms.

You should change the trans oil as soon as convenient with Honda ATF fluid, or any fluid that is certified to meet Type F standards.

Type F fluid is grabbier, and use of any other fluid will increase the wear on clutch packs and shorten the service life greatly.

Yes, the viscosity should remain the same rating. Changing between mineral and synthetic is no problem at all for gearboxes.

has any body heard abt caltex gear oil, how is that.

whats the viscosity and temperature range of that oil.

@onlyfaith Zic gear oil is working perfectly well. I feel the transmission has become a lot smoother. I bought the oil from Baig Autos in G-10. Yes, Honda City is a nice car to drive. Especially, in city driving due to its octagonal front shape. Makes your job a lot easier while turning and sneaking through traffic during rush hours :-). Also runs nice on the Motorway provided you replace the stock tyres with 195/60/15 size wheels with outclass performance and mileage for a 1.3L. However, due to its low clearance, the side skirts are Susceptible to dents on unpaved bumpy roads especially in rural areas. That's where the Corolla scores its point due to its adequate clearance and durability but with a boring laid back econo box drive. Apropos your query on Caltex gear oil. I'm using Caltex gear oil for last 10 months or so in my older Hyundai Excel. My experience is that it's a bit heavy due to its thicker viscosity.

If it is the original fill, it will likely be a straight 90W mineral oil. If Mobil 1 is not available, then look for any 75W-90 oil meeting at least ILSAC GF-4 standards.

What happened was that Honda supplied my vehicle with low gear oil level and its quality was also inferior. I had grinding issues with my gear since day one and the technicians at Honda wittingly refused to recognize it as a problem which prompted me to have the problem diagnosed from someone else. Thats where I had the gear oil changed and the oil was genuine. Since that gear oil change, my transmission has been extremely smooth. I sometimes feel that Honda oils have either deteriorated in quality or the company itself is using counterfeit oils to save money. You can never trust any local car manufacturer in this country.

GL-4 is the correct type. GF-4 referes to engine oils. I am sorry for the typo.

75W-85 GL-4 will work just fine for you.

CALTEX GL-5 SAE-90 THUBAN. I bought the original box from Caltex petrol station in Islamabad Super Market. On the box, it reads meets GL-4 requirements. The oil is a tad thick/slightly heavy but the transmission is smooth and there are no grinding issues.
