hi to all of you, i came across the story of billo a couple of days ago while searching for a beetle to buy in the uk,although i have never owned a beetle or indeed been inside of one in my life but i have always had a soft spot for old vw beetles and busses, a couple of years ago i went to brazil to find a 60s splitscreen camper but sadly could not find a suitable one, splitties in the uk are so expensive that i can not afford to buy 1.
lately i have been thinking of buying a pre 1973 beetle.
just out of curiosity i googled vw beetle scene in pakistan and there it was, the lagand that is billo, i went through all your posts and beautifull pics of billo and what a joy,
as you guys are very experienced i would love to get your advice about exporting a nice vdub to uk.
there are a few beetles for sale on pakwheels and i am not sure about what i will have to do about exporting to uk.
any advice from you will be greatly appriciated.

This is the flat bed tow truck used to load Billo in the shipping container. What you see is my Nissan which btw, was in perfect running condition, going to the wreckers to be crushed. To add insult to injury, I had to pay for towing to the wrecking yard and to have it crushed.

Good solid beetles do turn up for sale every so often but even if the car is half decent you can have it restored for a fraction of what it would cost you in the UK. I would suggest you bring all the parts required for the car over to Pakistan and take home a restored car. The availability of parts for aircooled VW's in this part of the world is a serious issue. The expertise to restore the cars is not a problem. Depending on how much you would like to spend, you can get from a daily driver to a show winner.

Once the car is ready you can get an NOC from the Ministry of Commerce and have it shipped out or drive back home if you are feeling adventurous.

The VWCOP would be glad to assist you in any way possible.

You have to consider two prices..

• price of the car

• cost of restoration

The cost of restoration is dependent on what kind of a finished product you wish to end up with. I am presently restoring a VW split window bus for someone and I have a budget of 1.9 lakh. (The restored buses btw sell in the range of $30,000 plus) The condition of the car is also very important. I have recently purchased a car that was garaged for the past decade or so. I reckon a spending budget of 150-200k rupees would make it a head turner.

You should me mentally prepared to spend in the vicinity of GBP 5000 for a properly restored pre 73 but this is not etched in stone. The price can go either way.
