Brake With ABS

I have one confusion want to clarify that. I know ABS will not let car skid while braking let us change lane. if there is no space to change the lane and we had to stop the car, car with ABS will stop in the same distance as compare to Non-ABS or not?

The breaking distance in theory is lesser than a car equipped with conventional braking system. However there are other factors involved as well. Tires profile, chassis dynamics, weight. E.g. A non-ABS 7th gen EXi stops considerably quicker than a local Corolla with ABS.

we can't compare two different cars for one having ABS and one having not.

How ever, having ABS car for the last 8 years, I would say that on lower speeds like less than 50 or say 45 Km/Hr the ABS made me feel to stop with greater distance. where as on High speeds like 80+ Km/Hr, the ABS is much efficient.

This also depends on the road (surface) some times the roll resistance is more than the friction resistance and some times its the other way around.

This is the cause.

If roll resistance is greater, means when the tyres lock, they start skidding on a layers of dust or pebbles etc
some times when the road is very good, the friction resistance is more, this is normally when you see a jet black brakes marks on road

I have a habit of reading owners manual of my cars and all of them state this " ABS does not shorten the braking distance and in some instances it even prolongs it." ABS was not designed to shorten the braking distance, its main function is to prevent locking of wheels in emergency situation so that the driver can steer the car away.The braking distance is determined by a lot of factors e.g the surface on which the car is being driven, condition of tyres, friction etc. So comparing cars having ABS with the ones not having ABS is quite difficult. On dry surfaces the Non ABS car can perform better than the one with ABS if applied correctly but only in straight line ( the chances of this are very rare as most people just stomp on the brake pedal in emergency situation and the wheels lock up).

bro, dont compare different cars with ABS and NON-ABS. like a XLI have no ABS and GLI have ABS, so same road, same tires (means all things same), ABS will stop at same distance or more?

Bro, me also read owner manual. there mention " ABS does not shorten the braking distance and in some instances it even prolongs it." but I was confused maybe ABS will stop car at long distance as compare to non-abs.

You're missing the point I am trying to make.

Comparing different cars was intentional to emphasise that ABS is not the only defining factor in braking distance.

A non-ABS car with superior chasis dynamics and weight dist may have a shorter braking distance than an ABS car with inferior chassis dynamics and weight distribution.

In exactly similar cars, ABS equipped cars are superior on most common surfaces.

I had an 7th gen exi before my current 7th gen vti and I have experienced that with Abs car takes longer to.stop especially at lower speeds where chances of skids is less at higher speeds locked wheels could make the car skid and increase stopping distance. So all in all I think one should expect greater stopping distance while driving an abs equipped car, just to be safe

However in some circumstances such as very dusty road, bald or cheap tires can cause ABS to lessen applied braking power so much that it takes ages to stop...

In snow ABS increases stopping distance whereas in ice it helps driver to stop, while non ABS car with locked wheels would keep skidding...

Overall I believe ABS really serves for what its intended to do and one should must opt for a car with ABS when choosing.

yes during emergency it really work wonder. I had two experience when I think I will hit next car, but due to ABS I changed lane. first happened after 7 days of purchased my car. I was on speed at highway, suddenly cars next to me make brakes due to one accident. if I made brake straight sure I was going to hit next car in high speed, luckily no car was in right so applied brake and change lane. alhumdulillah safe.

Just because your car has ABS, no need to drive like a maniac. Seen some prius and city drivers doing this kind of chit.
