Many people have imported chargers from AliExpress and they were very economical. Not sure how much it will cost now

One question: Muneer told me there would be an SPD in the charger box ... It's there but from your picture i see that you didnt use it.

Why not? Is it low quality?

A friend showed me a portable charger (Similar to the one BYD gives). Only difference is this one can go upto 7KW instead of 2KW.

Costed him 165,000.

SPD color doesn't matter. Initially there were sending the gray ones. Later changed to red.

This is fine. I am using one but received a different brand / gray coloured spd. On the extreme right of the box.

Way too expensive. Can be imported from AliExpress for much cheaper but recently prices have been hiked / some brands are not shipping to PK.

Issue with portable chargers is arranging earthing at locations, which require workarounds.

I went to Gulberg, Lahore. I have got all the information from BYD. Still a bit confused between to go for an Electric or a hybrid. My car usage is not so much. Maybe around 600 to 700km a month in city drive max, unless it goes for a long drive to Isloo. I know even hybrid does not really makes sense in this case.

My dad is above 70, he just liked BYD a lot. Its just giving him something he liked.
But when logically thinking, he says hybrid is a better option since it can also go on highway without range anxiety ( peace of mind ). Also, an electric will require a complete setup in our house. What if we decide to sell it after 2 years, whats the use of 7kW charger then.

These things were usually sold with the vehicle, especially when the Etron started selling in the second hand market.

Well, will the BYD be your only vehicle? If you don't have another car for long distances I think you may be better off looking for something else. It is certainly possible to plan trips from Lahore to Islamabad but you would be bound to charge on the way.

What exactly does he like? Maybe we can offer alternative options that will not make you worry about range anxiety

BYD makes sense only if you have high capacity solar system at home that can charge with the 7kw charger and most of your travel travel is within city.

If you don’t have adequate capacity solar OR you will be doing motorway trips above 250km then a hybrid will make more sense. Or another case is install enough solar at home for a range of benefits and free power.

Paid EV chargers are too expensive . Running/charging cost will be more than ICE cars.

I do have a fairly large solar system at home but considering our need and flexibility in sight, electric does not really make a lot of sense unless we have a good charging infrastructure in place. Its ok if for some trips, it costs me more. The driving pleasure of electric is different.

I am considering HRV hybrid and MG HS PHEV in my options. Both look fairly decent in my budget. With MG, our daily running will be more like electric and for long as a hybrid. On Monday, I plan to visit MG showroom.

You just need net metering, regardless of the solar plant size. Connecting the 7kw charger directly to the meter removes all solar inverter related issues.

Right.. but still got to offset the units used to charge, along with house load, requiring a decently sized system to avoid large bills

For occasional long trips taking a small cost hit is fine I guess if you got solar at home. Will save in the long run plus a new driving experience of EVs too.

On what routes do you travel on long? If it's Islamabad-Lahore, then it's easily doable because we have 3 charging locations now. Keep in mind the charging cost of DC chargers is high. But still many people take their EVs on long drives just to enjoy them.

Few senarios where EV makes sense.
* You have solar that produce extra units.
* Or install a separate single phase meter for EV charging only. I know a owner who is economically using his EV this way. Almost 50% cheaper than fuel.
* If you frequently travel out of city where charging stations do not exist. In this case, you should have fuel only vehicle for travelling out of city.
* If you rarely go out of city, you can keep an EV and use rent a car for out of city travelling. This will still have cost benefits in the long run due to daily savings done using EV.

Personally I never understood HEV or PHEV. I like to keep one fuel only vehicle along with EV. But in my case, I rarely go out of city. I am confused whether to keep my fuel vehicle or sell it. Because since I got my Atto, I have not used it due to cost benefits and driving pleasure.

I drove my city for the entire day yesterday. I'm even more motivated to sell it now but waiting for a suitable mid sized EV to replace it.
