Every day quality of PW content reaches a new low. Besides this, now it has become almost impossible for PW to create a video, blog, or a car comparison table that doesn’t contain any factually wrong number or statistic. I mean how hard is it to copy paste from spec sheets.

I'd been talking with the showroom people when I booked mine and they told me that all cars (not counting the PHEV Shark) until now came with the 7kw chargers but they could not promise them in writing to everyone. I'm glad to see them post it publicly now with a promise again

It makes sense. In a competitive market, Mega were living in a fool's paradise.
7kW is a must atleast for a full electric car.

I'm looking into installing the BYD charger next month and was discussing with different vendors the costs of it. I was quite shocked to hear quotations from companies on how overpriced some things seemed. Would love to discuss this with some owners who did not go to the official dealership.

What exactly is needed in terms of material? From my understanding there would be new wiring that can handle up to 32A from the main connection, a weatherproof DB box, some circuits for earth, some circuits for overload/short circuits and some breakers. Am I missing anything? I don't usually deal with these items so my assumption would be that material cost would be something around 20k so it baffles me what these guys are charging

• Earthing, if not present at home
• 10mm wires for Live and Neutral
• 4mm wire for earth
• 40A 2P MCB (breaker)
• SPDs (included in 7kW charger box)
• Voltage Protector
• RCD Type A. This is also called earth leakage protector. You won't find Type A in Pakistan. You have to buy it from AliExpress. All the RCDs I have found in Pakistan are Type AC which are useless in case of EV charger application. Even BYD vendors are using Type AC. Personally, I have not installed it yet due to this reason. This is a device for human/animal safety.

Truly not been able to find any yet. Shocked to hear that BYD/Mega is letting them get installed with warranty on Type AC. Heck, I didn't know of the RCD Type A/B vs Type AC stuff so that was super helpful!

Are you content with the slow charger? I personally do not really think that I have a specific need for the fast charger but since it's coming for free I was considering to charge it with that.

Where are you located? Got mine installed privately but followed all protocola except the AC leakage breaker.

I'm in Lahore, will defintely opt for a private installation given the prices the official licensed company is asking for it.

Are you concerned about the AC leakage breaker, thinking of changing it out or are you going to just go with it?

Like I mentioned previously, earth leakage protector is for human safety. Other devices are for charger and vehicle safety.
Personally, I have not installed RCD, hence I do not touch the equipment when it's operational. I plug in the charger, then turn on the breaker via Wi-Fi enabled app.

Similarly, unlock the car to pause the charging for a few seconds. Then I unplug the charger and just turn off the Wi-Fi breaker via app. Don't turn off the breaker while it's operational because that will significantly reduce the life of the breaker.

The car has a built-in scheduled charging feature.
Another option is to set a timer in your Wi-Fi breaker app.

I'm skipping the earth leakage breaker altogether. I did get a dedicated earthing pit made for the charger though.

No worries I already have a few electricians lined up and ready for it. Whoever I talked to is trying their best to convince me that the type A is not needed since there is earth already and in combination will be stable enough. I'm not convinced so I'm debating ordering am RCD type A from Aliexpress

Lols. Owner's manual of 7 kW charger clearly says Type A because that's the one which can handle both AC and DC current. Also I have seen many western EV charger installers on YouTube. All of them use Type A.

Make sure you buy 40A 2P RCD Type A from AliExpress. These are the specs as per owner's manual.

Thank you so much for the guidance! I had talked to people that installed Audi and BMW chargers and none of them had any idea either, or tried to justify them not being needed either. It just seems really odd to me how a safety standard like this just gets ignored
