Tbf part of this is because of the duty structures we have. Both the Shark and Canon Alpha are PHEV, and the Shark is a CBU on top of that. And both Shark and Canon Alpha are a segment above the Hilux, D-Max and Hunter because they're significantly bigger than them.

PHEVs don't get any duty benefits of EVs and have similar taxes and duties as regular hybrids. And as far as I remember, tax holiday on imported hybrids was discontinued in 2024 so these are taxed close to how a regular imported gasoline vehicle would.

If GWM also launch with a CBU, I speculated that the price would be PKR 30-40 million or even higher considering the gasoline 2.0T HEV Tank 500 is still PKR 45 million and the Canon Alpha is the truck variant of Tank 500, just with a PHEV drivetrain.

CKD hopefully would have lower prices because they'd be taxed at 8.5% like other hybrids so maybe BYD should've waited for that.

BTW, in all the markets I have checked, the BYD Shark 6 is either close to or significantly more expensive than the BYD Seal 06, so not surprised it's the same in Pakistan.

On top of that, I did a very quick check and in the couple of markets I checked, the BYD Shark 6 is also significantly more expensive than a Toyota Hilux as well.

I doubt BYD sells a lot of Shark 6 compared to the Hilux internationally as well because their pricing is pretty bad in comparison.

Have you seen the number of Atto 3 on the road. It took some time but I'm now seeing almost as many Atto 3 on roads daily as I see the Q8 / e-tron. And this will likely keep going up. I see 2-3 parked in my office building almost every day and one or two at my gym as well.

BYD can now sell the charger for PKR 1 million and it wouldn't matter because they've already gotten the mindshare with people (and "influencers") hyping up their brand. Same thing that happened with Haval / GWM.

I was watching a review of the upcoming Canon Alpha where the reviewer mentioned that its front monogram resembled a Toilet seat.

Now every time I see one I cant unsee it.

I guess he meant they’re trying hard to reverse any success they got from Atto 3.

Now all they are getting is negativity and criticism. Going on this trajectory is not a good sign for BYD.

I don't understand the sudden craze of pickup trucks. Pakistan is not the market for pickup trucks. Most of the Hilux that are sold are sold to the government or B2B sales.

BYD Pakistan said they would bring the Sealion, which would have been a fantastic car at 1.5-1.6cr even as a CBU. It would have destroyed the market of Sorento and Santa Fe.

My only wild guess as to why they launched this pickup truck is that they are seriously behind schedule. They want to have some sort of lineup and brand mindshare before they can start making CKDs so that people are aware of the brand when the factory will start producing cars. But they also cannot bring a 'mass market' car just yet because they don't have the dealership or aftersales network to deal with that demand. By having a BYD Shark in the lineup they can claim they have a world class offering for the public, but they also know it won't sell so they don't need to worry about spare parts, after sales etc.

well,there are a lot of factors.

1. this is a CBU ; and in this duty state, may be it cannot come below 2 croroe.
2. stupid paksitanis are already paying 2 crore for 2.8 fortuner and old prados; so this aint that much of a bad deal.

however, the real deal is that haval poer plugin ckd double cabin can come at the right price point and kill shark for good.

Basically, you are proving my point. The only, somehow, near to appropriate priced car is taking the volume. The rest e.g Seal is an extremely rare sight. WithiShark, they are also going no where. Even when considering an Atto3, I have to spend over 1mil for the car to get it running which inlc WHT, Reg, Charger, Installation, Insurance. Crazy !!
Selling a few hundred units is also no success. BYD, in Pakistan, is no where near estabilished. Will not say this for Haval.

Paying 2 crore for a Fortuner and old Prados is not just the price of the car. Market acceptability, brand value and also aftersales is all included in this price. A Fortuner or Prado has a failure ( though never heard of it) and there are quite a lot of mechanics which can bring it to a running state or you can easily visit a wide dealership network. Tail light gets smashed and you can find three different qualities in the market.
What will you do with a 2 crore Shark ? Pakistan is much bigger than just 3 cities.

If I have 2 crore right now and I had to chose between the BYD and Fortuner, it would be the Fortuner 10/10 times. The SUV body makes it more practical for daily usage. And you cannot put a price on the durability of a Toyota diesel engine.

That outrageous price is mainly because it's CBU. Apart from the significantly higher duty structure, Mega guys have priced it higher also because of the supposedly better quality parts and materials being used in imported vehicles as compared to CKD units assembled locally. That's the same reason GWM Tank is ridiculously priced at 4.5 crores right now. It will soon be assembled locally and as per Sazgar team estimates, should be commercially rolled out by Jan/Feb next year. Price of the CKD Tank is expected to be around 2.5-2.75 cr (in case of no major USD depreciation) so you can see the difference of around 2 cr from current CBU prices.

The real game of these companies would start once GWM and BYD roll out their CKD units for Tank / Cannon and Shark respectively. Only then they would be able to give a really tough time to Toyota Fortuner and Revo. Till then, both Fortuner and Revo appear to have better price proposition which would support their sales for the short term. Sazgar is coming earlier but BYD won't be behind as Shark 6 CKD should be in market by July/Aug 2026.

Notwithstanding the price, Shark 6 is a welcome addition as people are underestimating PHEV technology, which provides excellent flexibility to consumers unlike the limitations of driving a purely electric, or purely gasoline or even a hybrid car. Exciting times ahead.

MG PHEV is already here under 1cr. This shark I know is bigger and is a truck cannot go for above 1.2cr.

At this price any future CKD sales might also be affected by negative initial brand and vehicle impressions.

MG HS PHEV is not a modern PHEV by any standards. It has a small battery pack, a somewhat weak motor and poor range. It also doesn't support DC charging. It's even priced significantly lower than other Chinese PHEVs in other markets as well.

It should not be the benchmark for PHEVs.

Who said it’s a benchmark? The gentleman was praising Shark and PHEV as if it’s a new thing in Pakistan and nobody else has launched it here.

Just saying PHEV is not something new and cannot be the reason for foolish pricing like BYD has done. They cannot hide behind PHEV PHEV.

Oh right, yeah PHEVs are definitely not new in the market.

The only real difference in that regard is that MG HS PHEV is CKD so it gets all the tax benefits of locally assembled hybrids with significantly lower duties and taxes.

Meanwhile the Shark 6 is CBU so it gets no tax holiday whatsoever since hybrid CBUs are taxed the same as any regular gasoline CBU so the duty gets ridiculously crazy.

IMO it's absolutely stupid to launch a CBU PHEV in the current duty structure if you actually intend to get any sales so no idea why BYD and Mega thought they should launch the Shark 6, unless @darthvader is spot on and it's only for marketing reason without making any real commitment. That makes sense if you think about why they showcased that during the 2024 Auto Show as well as paraded it during the recent PSL as well.

16-17kwh is the standard size of PHEV C segment crossovers. RAV4 has a 18kwh battery and 67km of range.

Personally, I was expecting a price between 18~20 million for the obvious reasons. So I am not surprised here.
The major reasons for high price tag is CBU, PHEV, and Ford Raptor sized truck.

At the same time, I think it's a marketing stunt just to show the product. No such vehicle has sold in masses when launched in CBU form. Examples are Camry, Accord, HR-V, Tank, Prius (the one launched by the Indus, not gray imports) etc. The question is what will be the price when it comes as CKD. That will dictate its market success.

Personally, I see a severe competition between BYD and GWM in future when CKDs of both companies start. Specially between Sealion 6, Shark 6, H6 PHEV, Canon Alpha. Currently, Sazgar have benefit of early release of CKDs due to presence of factory.
