Musharraf to tell ground facts to Negroponte (Posted at 2305)
ISLAMABAD: President Gen Pervez Musharraf said Friday that he would apprise Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte of the ground realities that led to the imposition of emergency.
He said this while giving an interview to US-based newspaper.
General Musharraf said the hundreds of people arrested under the emergency have been released; however, anyone who is found violating the law would be sent to jail or restrictions would be slapped on him, as the government does not want anybody to adopt protesting behaviour.
He continued to say that in view of the increasing threat posed by the suicide attacks and terrorists, the crackdown was indispensable.
Musharraf said he would tell Negroponte that Pakistan comes firsts; he imposed the emergency owing to terrorism and extremism.
The general insists he declared the emergency to prevent judicial meddling in the murky operations of Pakistan's security services and the rising militant threat from derailing the vote.
Negroponte has phone conversation with Benazir (Posted at 2250)
WASHINGTON: U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, in Islamabad, spoke by phone with Benazir Bhutto on Friday in what is believed to be the highest-level U.S. contact with the Pakistani opposition leader since President Pervez Musharraf imposed a state of emergency, a senior State Department official said.
The official would not give details of the call but said Negroponte had generally underscored Washington's opposition to Musharraf's extra-constitutional actions and its desire to see Bhutto, who was under house arrest until earlier Friday, and other opposition figures free to peacefully participate in Pakistan's political sphere.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity to disclose a private diplomatic contact.
Negroponte, the second-highest ranking U.S. diplomat, arrived in Islamabad on Friday to press Musharraf and his government to quickly end the state of emergency, set a date for free and fair legislative elections in January and release opposition leaders.
The United States also wants Musharraf to give up his position as army chief.
Iran says 'will never' renounce uranium enrichment (Posted at 2225)
TEHRAN: Iran on Friday vowed it would "never" give up uranium enrichment, after a new UN nuclear watchdog report worried world powers by confirming Tehran was pressing ahead with the sensitive activity.
"Iran will never give up the uranium enrichment technology, which it has mastered, as the (UN nuclear) agency said," Iran's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali Asghar Soltanieh was quoted by the local news agency.
"Iran will never back down on its undeniable rights which are explicitly mentioned in the agency's statute," he added.
In its report released on Thursday, the UN nuclear watchdog said Iran was still defying the ultimatums to suspend enrichment but that it had made some progress in revealing the extent of its nuclear programme.
US President George W. Bush said Friday that international pressure on Iran "must, and will, grow" if Tehran refuses to freeze sensitive nuclear work.
