Caltex Havoline 5w40: The VERDICT!

Alright ppl
As many of u may know i posted a thread about changing my engine oil from caltex havoline 10w30 to caltex havoline fully synthetic 5w40 in a Honda civic 8th gen(reborn)...The results are as follows:

1. Morning startup is better...less noisy as compared to 10w30
2.Fuel economy dropped(yes dropped) ! ..
3.Car feels alot heavier( so much so its quite noticeable)..
4.Engine noise has decreased a bit.

So i conclude that 5w40 is NOT the grade for our civics its too thick of an oil..my driving habits are really gud i never redline and keep rpms below 2.5 k..So now i want to know that which brands produce 5w30 because it is what honda recommends too..i want to know specifically about total quartz 9000 5w30(imported one not honda one)..how is it performing in honda civic 8th gen???

After Honda Synthetic Oil+OEM Oil Filter

It gave me mileage of 18+ Km per liter (with A/C) on motor with three adults sitting in the car.
I have a gadget, it keeps showing me average and Instant KPL
I never crossed 125 Km/Hr, My average speed was about 110 km/Hr
It gave me over all trip mileage (with local included in Peshawar) of 14.5 kpl

I went to Peshawar, drove about 40-50 Km with in Peshawar and came back to ISB.
It was all done for Rs:2950/- @108.x Rupees Petrol Price with A/C

I didn't notice any change in engine noise/sound
I didn't notice any heavier/lighter engine.
I didn't notice any starting difference since its summer these days.
BUT
I did Notice a significant Fuel Consumption difference

MashAllah thats a great average i must say..i also have that gadget that shows me instant kp/l etc..it means i should go for the honda oem oil and oem oil filter:-)

It is a old dig ... just posting it for the sake of information.

I have a City 2010... since the very first oil change it was running on Caltex 10W-30 which was changed after every 3500km.

Recently when it was about to reach 68,000km on push of a friends I decided to switch to a synthetic oil. Ended up pouring in Caltex 5W-40 (surprisingly they don't have 5W-30 in Pakistan).

Have driven around 2000km... so far the City engine has accepted the change well.. starting it in the cold morning of winters seems much smoother - or maybe it is just that I have spent Rs.3750 on oil change which used to be for 2300 earlier

No significant increase or decrease in the fuel average, maybe a slight improvement. There is no decrease in the oil level as yet... and dont feel any heaviness as suggested by some of you over here... infact it seems a little smother than previously.

Next plans: Change this oil at 5000km... will opt either for Honda 5W-30 (not sure if Metro is a good option to buy this from) or might go for Total Quartz 9000 (5W-30).... and change it after every 7500km.

oh and I use VIC oil filters.

stick to the 5000 drain intervals
These econoboxes have small oil sumps so you cant extend the drain interval by much
Keep it 5000 and your engine will be happy

I don't feel comfortable with drain interval of over 5k no matter how good the oil is. Quartz 9000 is good.

but you did not share why you are not satisfied with it and willing for a change again
i am still using this oil in my new car. previously in city for 10k interval.now corolla 7500 interval.

Well why would like want to switch again... for simple reason that oil recommended for Honda City is 5w-30 and not 5w-40. Also, I am not sure how will the engine response if summer if I continue to use this oil.
Whats your experience of using 5w-40 in summer?

Well its fully synthetic and some what ecnomical. The better oils such as Liqui moly/Mobil or a new brand I heard that is doing well is totachi are expensive. Honda's own 5w-30 the API SN one is I think is from Caltex.

I have always used Liqui Moly 10w-40 Super in my corolla from last 6 or 7 years but now with City 2007, Started with 5w-30.

Again i am also confused if I should stick with 5w-30 in summers or switch to 10w-40 hmm. If we consider temperature the right choice will be 10w-40

sir city 07 with 180k+km i always pour 5w30 all year round and not a drop is reduced and the engine stays happy
So dont switch to a thicker oil in summers keep that 5w30
But mantain strict 5k interval
