The real problem with the clutched fan, apart from the fact that whatever I find now has basically turned into a fixed fan, is the lack of a shroud. The original shroud extends quite far back over the fan clutch. And finding a powerful 12V fan isn't an easy task and would take weeks of hunting. I'm hoping to get at least some performance out of the current fan setup, but I understand if that's the limiting factor and I'll have to make do with whatever AC performance I get for now.
It's just that before the AC guys replaced the compressor twice, the AC would blow colder at idle and even cycle the thermostat on the evap at 0°C while driving, with only the condenser fan running with the compressor, and the radiator fan controlled by coolant temp. So I know there's some performance on the table even without the tough upgrades.
