To build on your excellent guide, I keep different cloth and coloured microfibers for different jobs. Like light coloured for paint, dark blue for wheels, door jambs, engine cleanup. I have very fine/plush TRC Eagle and Creature Edgeless for drying, removing polish, etc.
One thing I have learnt over the years is to take care of the microfiber cloths, or it loses its excellent qualities very quickly. Earlier I used to wash them in washing machine in hot water (40'C) and usual washing powder (Tide).
Now, what I tend to do is:
a) wash less, by investing in more microfiber and cycling through them,
b) wash in washing machine @ 30'C,
c) use car wash shampoo
or some liquid detergent, but no washing powder ever,
d) dry them on lines, away from direct sunlight.
I usually find liquid detergent, which is free of any fabric softener. You can find some in market, but they are not very common.
Another trick I learnt from the pros is to dip them in your wash bucket after you have finished washing and wash after 1-2 days. You can listen to the Detalks podcast by the TRC.
But yeah, I agree this is an important topic and it needs to be covered more often and in more detail.
